Nouâdhibou is divided into three main sections: Keran, the town centre; Numerowatt, the ever-expanding section where most people live (from Keran to the end of Numerowatt is about 13 km); and Cansado, around 10km south of Keran, essentially a large, dusty industrial zone where SNIM (Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière de Mauritanie) is based. (https://www.journeum.com/dst/Africa/Mau ... ibou/About)

Cansado: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cansado (addition to wiki info: MIFERMA today SNIM)

Image
and more http://verrsen.com/project/charlotte-pe ... e-cansado/

to the name Cansado: ... "a long time ago, fishermen from the Canary Islands landed, tired and exhausted by this perilous journey. When they arrived, they were nicknamed the “cansados” (tired in Spanish)"
".. this all-white and blue village on the seashore bears no resemblance to the red iron mine. In Cansado, everything is planned to live in self-sufficiency: homes, small businesses, school, hospital but also the youth center, outdoor play areas for everyone, from laborer to office manager." (GT)

CZ, Rescue Station Makov
20128 - PURPLE
previous info (03.12. data at 5h): viewtopic.php?p=770826#p770826

Nouadhibou - the second largest city in Mauritania and serves as a major commercial center. It is situated on a 65-kilometer peninsula or headland called Ras Nouadhibou (more - wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nouadhibou)
- stork arrived to this peninsula on 18.11.

Situation in the morning: At noon and both morning positions (3 and 5 h) are already in the Purple fishing area.
The current situation: Purple flew from this place to the NW, its other 4 locations are located in the community garden. At 10 o'clock the stork flew to Pointe Chacal and continued to the southern edge of the peninsula.
Two positions are above sea level (11.30 and 12 h) - stork turned and flew (slowly) back to its fishing area (localisation at 14 h). Next turn to the west and today is the last location on/above the Pointe Chacal.

-----
edit:
"stork turned and flew (slowly) back" - our young stork lost very probably much energy by the fly above the ocean, but there is maybe one other answer why he flew slowly:
... "In the afternoon, the wind rises and it is like if sand was raining. Those are terrible conditions to be outside, for both my eyes and my camera. The wind in the Sahara has been always very strong (it would be a torture to cross it from south to north) but what is happening in Nouadhibou is again one level up. A ski mask would be totally appropriate." ... and on other place (the way back from the southern edge of the peninsula): .... "I must however get back on the piste to be home before night. That means taking the end-of-the-world piste with sand flying over me and trying to win, meter after meter, the distance against the wind. I am almost as slow as a man walking in the middle of this surreal martian scenery. .... Getting back to the paved road, and then another 10 km until Nouadhibou, takes me ages and much effort ... " (by bicycle) https://freewheely.com/2013/04/nouadhibou/
-----

Image

stork flew cca 7,3 km above the open water (Atlantic ocean) - on the northern edge this peninsula is the distance shorter to the "continent"
Image

edit:
the path line is above the border line (Western Sahara to the west - Mauritania to the east) to this area and far above the ocean (we see the New Lighthouse - better view e.g. https://www.lightphotos.net/photos/disp ... ?pos=-7143)

.
Ras Nouadhibou is a 60-kilometre (37 mi) peninsula or headland divided by the border between Mauritania and Western Sahara on the African coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It is internationally known as Cabo Blanco in Spanish or Cap Blanc in French (both meaning "White Headland"). The headland facing south ends at the cape of the same name. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ras_Nouadhibou, https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ras_Nouadhibou)

I changed this photo http://wikimapia.org/29744706/National- ... to/5883720
that is better - his today "trip" to south end the peninsula: the meeting point between the bay and the ocean
(view from east to the west - very probably, or vice versa)
Image
big photo https://mondedesphares.fr/IMG/jpg/09-15.jpg

.....
EDIT:
infos and more interesting photos and short video :2thumbsup: https://mondedesphares.fr/?Phare-de-Cap-Blanc.html
one of them:
view from south to north
Image
big photo https://mondedesphares.fr/IMG/jpg/07-20.jpg
....

there are interesting places:
1/ Old lighthouse
2/ National Park
3/ United Malika

3/ UNITED MALIKA

The United Malika is a Moroccan refrigerated vessel which ran aground in Ras Nouadhibou in Mauritania on August 4, 2003. The 17 sailors, constituting the crew, were all rescued by the Mauritanian navy. The ship was built in 1979. (wiki - https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Malika or https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Malika) view/PHOTO on the Malika - Nov 2007 https://goo.gl/maps/vEVaZgkwgGBEiBUD9 and wider view - Nov 2009 https://goo.gl/maps/2chLoMoe9746bEao6

Malika is the most frequently photographed wreck (tolerated ships graveyard - more than 300 ship - around Nouadhibou is already a big problem)
:2thumbsup: (the storie and more very nice photos) http://www.fredrikarnell.com/stories/st ... alika.html

edit: " ... a man walking in the middle of this surreal martian scenery. As I start chatting with him, he says he is the guard for the shipwreck. A guard for a wreck? Yes, because if not guarded, robbers would come and steal the iron. As a result, he lives in a wreck, with cooking facilities, radio and TV. Very cool, but probably less cool if it has been already 10 years … " (https://freewheely.com/2013/04/nouadhibou/)

2/ RÉSERVE SATELLITE du CAP BLANC - Cap Blanc Satellite Reserve (Wildlife Reserve in Nouâdhibou)
the Réserve Intégrale de Cap Blanc (covers 310,000 ha) belong to the Banc d'Arguin National Park (World Heritage Site - UNESCO and IBA)

1986: Cap Blanc Reserve added. This consists of the former Reserve Intégrale de la Baie du Lévrier on the inland coast of Cap Blanc and the Reserve Intégrale de Las Cuevecillas on the Côte des Phoques (the seal coast) on the Atlantic side of Cap Blanc (https://conservation-development.net/Pr ... Arguin.pdf)

---
edit:
"The southern tip of the peninsula and the surrounding seas form the reserve." - IBA (Important Bird Area), more info http://datazone.birdlife.org/site/facts ... mauritania
------

At the absolute southernmost tip of the same peninsula, there is a small national park, where for a small fee you can observe the meeting point between the bay (Dakhlet Nouadhibou bay = Baie du Lévrier) and the Atlantic Ocean. The point is home to several monk seals - it is the only place in the world where Mediterranean monk seals form a true colony. ... The Parc Naturel Du Cap Blanc is especially noted for the largest colony of the endangered monk seal in the universe. There is also a museum.
