The second new WtE is Kelli, adult female

Her home is Pärnu Bay and the bogs in the North of it

It will be interesting to follow their ways and I hope they are doing well now after their treatments.

Thank you Bea! :)

Yes, I have already done that but hoped that there would be more to learn somewhere.
That's a pity but okay.

Great Bittern Autumn Migration

There is again already well known Great Bittern BITT03 from Latvia on the birdmap, a male bird, which was already good for some surprise :D
BITT03 is another adult male Great Bittern caught in small pond in Kurzeme region in Latvia. He has been caught at his booming site by using mist-nets on 21st April, 2017 in overgrown pond near the village Lamiņi, Tukums County. During the summer and autumn bird visited several small wetlands within the County. On 14th November he reaches Lake Kaņieris which is about 33 kilometres from capturing site. Last signal from there came on 18th November. There were no signals until the end of January 2018. Then on January 31 suddenly bird appeared in Sweden, not far from Malmö.

Image

With data from 16. August BITT03 is still pretty "local"

Picture to bring to our minds how big Great Bitterns are

Vova and Kalle are on their way to the South - while Marko and Ivo are still "at home"
Is there any explanation? Did Vova and Kalle not breed and have not to take care of anybody?

As far as I know both Kalle and Vova bred successfully.

The males leave after their offspring has left. The birds are individuals - they do not go all at the same time. Depends on circumstances and unknown factors linked to their inner impulse stemming from their collective to 'go'.

Hi aquiline,

Vova had one offspring this season and about Kalle I currently don´t know, but I hope to get some more information with time. But I suppose he was breeding.

As far as I know the timeframe for osprey migration gives a lot of room for their individual decisions. I see the dates that we know from our nest cam ospreys and those from the birdmap ospreys as examples, but not as rules.

Elena's station is taking a break. He's probably confused.
No new dates since August 18th. ( :puzzled: )

Thank you for your interesting remarks.

When I look at the distances our birds are flying I always think 'OMG what an effort'.
But when I see that for example Kalle is flying at such speed without longer stops I assume that is also fun to fly without any worries :headroll:

aquiline: Kalle is heading as quickly as possibly to Kharzynska-Gulf near the Krim to take a longer holiday and to eat well
before he crosses the Black Sea. He is resting there every year.
