Re: Migration Map

Good Morning !

I'm si happy to see the Ospreys already in Africa, near their wintering area, with their southern fish :loveshower:

But very sad to see the line of Raivo, over there in Turkey.
I remember that few years ago there was a WS from Hungary(?), who disappeared next to sames town. It was near a military airport.

Data & update 27.9.2017:

Osprey Markus has seemingly found a good place for fish in Chad. See detail pic here, there is a river near:

For better reference, the bigger picture:

http://up.picr.de/30480780kg.jpg

Ospreys Karlis and Vadim are keeping near the Nile at the border to Sudan. Osprey Kalle is still crossing Turkey.

The ospreys are nowhere near their wintering grounds yet,
or did I misunderstand something here? Quote from Abigyl:
... Osprey already in Africa, near their wintering area ...
Even Osprey Vadim will have to make some thousand k's before arriving at Lake Turkana (last year's wintering site).

It's nearer than before.

They are near water areas and can manage, it's better than in the middle of a dry desert.

Data & Update 28.9.17:

I really wonder where Karlis' wintering site will be as we do not have his data from other years:

Image

(Karlis is the one with the blue line; at the top of the picture Vadims symbol with the light blue line can be seen)

What can happen to Karlis? :puzzled: No news since 27.09. He was near the border between Sudan and South Sudan.

A German-Russian cooperation has equipped 5 young emperors(I don`t know, if the translation korrekt) with a transmitter. The migration behavior of these birds is relatively unknown and is to be investigated with the transmitters

I guess you mean Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca). I didn't know either - it was easy to find
name and translation via Google, though. The term 'emperor' does not mean anything in this context.

It has to be : Eastern imperial eagle because of the region.

NABU (see Jujanis link above) says 'Imperial Eagle' without 'Eastern' - and that's what I translated.

Солнечный орел (Aquila heliaca) (Eastern Imperial Eagle - Kaiseradler - also Могильник)

Well both names are used, Imperial eagle was recently split into two species by most ( but not all) taxonomic authors: Eastern i.e. (Aquila heliaca) and Spanish i.e. (Aquila adalberti). I guess dictionaries haven't bothered updating the names yet.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_imperial_eagle
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_imperial_eagle

Avibase is really good in showing local names but remember that they are based in the U.S. and uses the north-american Clements checklist of english bird names and that differs a lot from european birdguides' english names..
Another international checklist that is better for Europe is here: http://www.worldbirdnames.org/

About Estonian cranes autumn migration, from the LK main page:

Crane talk
It is a pleasure to tell you that the cranes equipped with satellite transmitters in Estonia (the sat cranes, 10 altogether) are alive and well and have started their autumn migration flights too...
