Matsalu Bay (Estonian: Matsalu laht) is one of the most important wetland bird areas in Europe, due to its prime position on the East Atlantic Flyway. Large numbers of migratory birds use Matsalu as a staging area. Every spring over two million waterfowl pass Matsalu, of which around 1.6 million are long-tailed ducks."

Looks like Karula found the north-western corner of Estonia too crowded, and turned back to more solitary places.

A "fun fact": a few kilometres west of his current location is Kurese village. It's probably very old. It's name was originally Kureselja, which means "back of a stork" or "back of a crane". This name has been recorded as early as the 16th century. Since white storks are only late immigrants in Estonia, the name probably comes from a black stork or a crane; I'm not sure which because both are "kurg/kured" in Estonian language (this is my own guess; maybe someone knows better).
This Kurese village is certainly 1000+ years old but it was vital and inhabited until the Soviet regime basically destroyed its populations in the mid-20th century. Landscape is still very archaic; beautiful at the time of dandelions.

"back of a stork" or "back of a crane"...
That's nice to know!
Thank you Trine :2thumbsup:

It's very sad to hear what happened to the people of that old village.

Trine, yesterday you mentioned some places that are 2000 years old. Can you say anything about those places, or where one can read about it?
In my later years I have developed an interest in history/archeology.

In my later years I have developed an interest in history/archeology.
Those I mentioned yesterday were e.g. strongholds or hill-forts at Keava: there are two of them, one is 2000+ years old and the other is younger (Viking Age if I'm not mistaken). Then there is a ring-wall enclosure (a sort of fortified settlement, I imagine) at Lipa, also 2000+ years old. And several burial places of the same age. The most well-known in the area is Varbola stronghold or fort, one of the largest and most powerful centers until the German conquest in early 13th century.

From Karula's current area, the first thing to mention is Soontagana stronghold from the 7th-13th centuries.
The landscape is loaded with history :book:

Anne  It's no problem at all. :)

Many thanks for the wonderful pictures from Türisalu Beach and especially from the Matsalu Bay. A paradise for migratory birds! :D

Trine :hi: Thanks a lot for the report about Kurese village! How nice was the old name. :D And very sad the fate of the people who lived there. :-(

Thanks again, Jo.

Our Karula crossed the Pärnu Bay around 13:00. Full speed!
Looks like he was in a hurry to get back in Latvia.

Pärnu Bay:

At about 14:45 he crossed the Latvian border, near Lookuninga LKA.

He spent quite some time east of Aloja. Possibly Karula was hungry and found food in that area, at the Ūpšupīte Stream in 'Alojas lauku teritorija'.
Then he flew a little bit more northwards again. Back to Estonia? :D

"Aloja (German: Allendorf) is a town in northern Latvia, close to the border with Estonia. Until 2009 it was within the country's Limbaži District.
Aloja as a settlement was first mentioned in written sources in 1449. Aloja saw rapid development after Latvian agrarian reforms in 1920. In 1925 Aloja was granted a status of a village and it became also a centre of the parish. In 1936 new Rīga-Rūjiena railway line was constructed through Aloja. In 1992 Aloja was granted town rights. Since 2009 Aloja is administrative center of the Aloja municipality."
