many thanks for todays pictures from Karula‘s paths and the weather data. He really flew a lot today.
Thanks a lot, Anne, for the article from Wim Van den Bossche! It is really interesting and I will try to read the whole report at the weekend.
It is remarkable that wintering in Israel depends on the time of arrival.
Then there really is a good chance that Vedru will stay. I believe this would increase his chances of survival.
Most probably, yes.
I hope Vedru finds a nice place where he can find plenty of food without too much competition from the older, more experienced Black Storks - and numerous other birds. It's nowhere really easy for these very young storks, I guess. There’s still so much to discover, so much to learn.
There has been a birdmap update for VEDRU.
Vedru flew to Kfar Ruppin.
VEDRU
• previous data: 18.11.2020, distance 5177 km (8 km in 1 day), at the fishponds of Heftsiba/Beit Alfa in Israel.
• NEW data: 20.11.2020, distance 5231 km (54 km in 2 days), near Kfar Ruppin in Israel.
Vedru was looking for food on a drainage canal from the Tirat Zvi ponds.
Vedru's current area. He has returned to the place near the Jordan River where he spent the night before (19 to 20)
Kfar Ruppin (Hebrew: כְּפַר רוּפִּין, lit. Ruppin Village) is a kibbutz in the Beit She'an Valley, about 5 km southeast of Beit She'an in northern Israel. A member of the Kibbutz Movement, it falls under the jurisdiction of Valley of Springs Regional Council. In 2019 it had a population of 531.
The area is known for birdwatching due to its location on one of the most important bird migration flyways between Europe and Africa. A bird ringing station is also located there. The kibbutz culture hall, built in 1965 on a hill near the original tower and stockade structures, is being converted into a birdwatching observatory and research center.

Maybe I will add some pics of Vedru’s new area tomorrow. Now it's bedtime.
Good night.
