Dear Maru,

Many thanks, Anne. This is very nice for our Maru.
Also the map that shows her long, long way to Africa.
Now I'm again in tears but that's o.k.
I'm so glad her little body was retrieved. Rest in peace, Maru.

Thank you also, Summi, for your nice words.

To Solo and all those who took part in this intercontinental chaine - thank you!
It was so fast and efficient!

I join all those who have already thanked you, Mr. Amr Hady, for the great deed you have done for our special bird MARU, for research and for us - hundreds of people who have followed her from the day she hatched. You deserve all the respect and appreciation!

Some people say that the world became a cold and alienated place, but such events are very encouraging and heartwarming; It gives hope that there are still good people in the world, who give their time and energy to help others even if they are far away, and contribute to the environment and nature.

I hope someone around you will tell your story because it's so important to spread this kind of news, around us.
I'm wishing you a good life and success wherever you and your family are! Many thanks !

Urmas says that sending the transmitter to him by post is not a good idea. Better if someone can act as courier.

Is it a good time to ask social media if a person is willing to carry a transmitter from Egypt to Estonia?
It is a lot to ask, but maybe well worth asking.

About sending the Transmitter...

I don't think it's a good idea to put it on this nice man's back.

Don't forget that in some countries things like this looks suspicious and can even take people to jail and more.

If there is an Estonian Embassy or consulate there, there must be someone working for cultural or educational or this kind of affairs. There must be a way to do it "by the book" .

I'll say again, publishing this story in local media might help to make it easier.

Good Luck !

After a hint of watcher I sent information about found transmitter to Estonian embassy in Cairo. Will see, what they reply, could be interesting for embassy to work with Black Stork issue.
Everything works well and smooth by now!

Abigyl, I agree with every word you have written;-as-Liz-wrote.

Vita-wrote-to-me:
That's a beautiful story...How birds connected us ❤.
How we, non professionals, are making things happen 😉
Without the group, I couldn't be of any help. And without the group, you wouldn't contact me.

Big thank there to Ahmed Waheed and Amr Hady.
They've put so much effort in that :2thumbsup:

Btw.-Urmas-wrote-to-me:

The 3 flat lines (x, y and z), yesterday after 13:00, indicate that Maru didn't move anymore.

The average lowest night temperature (inside the transmitter) was between 19 and 21 degrees.
Last night the temperature dropped to 15°.

Hi Anne!

Feel sad to see these bad news of Maru, however remember her in the nest at Karula forest (Bears village?), sheltered and fed by parents, growing up every day, until fledging.

Urmas writes that she walked a lot but still flew for overnight during the last days. Evidently she perished at the feeding grounds. The accelerometer indicates that she walked inclined to one side and after death was positioned balanced sideways, head end of the body slightly down. This was maybe caused by injury in another leg or some asymmetric load attached to her, which she could not get rid of. A predator may have consumed her toes, wild animal life as she was living, or she got some kind of net or rope around the neck. It seems as if she had fallen to the loaded side three days before perishing and twice two days before it.

Thanks for resque co-operation team due to recover the body!

Edit: corrected the birds name

Good Morning kuhankeittäjä !

Thanks for your very interesting info. All this can be seen in the graphs ?

This was Maru who stayed in Egypt, not our Paike who is still considered "missing" in Greece.
You can correct the name in your own msg.

Thanks for your note. I corrected the name. Evidently I have thought too much of the mystery of Päike.

Better ask from an ornitologist what is reliable and what is not, to their experience.

Anyhow the accelerometer measures the Earths gravity field components plus movement acceleration of the bird. So the attitude of the bird can be seen from the values of acceleration, if it is not accelerating itself very fast. Standing head up can be seen as negative red component values and catching food head down as positive peaks in between. In yellow is shown whether the bird is chest down or up. Maru has totally capsized during her last falling to the side. She may have been very weak already, or a predator was attacking her, or because of some other valid reason.

To me it seems not impossible that Maru started losing its body temperature during nights 4 to 2 before perishing and had fewer in the last night. Maybe she could not get enough food daytime or was wounded or both. Interpreted from backpack temperature she perished in a shadow, where the Sun turned to shine after death.

As mentioned above, understanding accelerometer and temperature readings of backpack at a bird belong to ornitogists good professional skills, my writings are just laymans opinions for discussion of possibilities, meanwhile.
