Thanks Solo for this new interesting facts about the birds wintering 1/2019 in Northern Israel
On the end, at 6/1/19, he mentioned "Giora Leitner", if iremember well, this is the Photogr who took pictures of Latvian BS about 2-3 years ago. I'm sure he met Karula too...

You‘re right, Abigyl. Giora Leitner has photographed our Ziluka-Upene from Latvia in Israel in year 2015, probably in October, at her first migration. Upene was ringed and had a transmitter.
There are several very nice pictures:

Scroll down a little bit.

and here on the goris-website (Maris Strazds' page):
http://www.goris.lv/zuze-apsteigusi-upeni/

It‘s possible that he/she also meets Karula. That would be great! :D

In winter quarters and on the Migration black storks also accept dryer habitats. "Im Winterquartier und auf dem Zug akzeptieren Schwarzstörche auch trockenere Lebensräume (www.bfn.de)." (https://vswffm.de/index.php/component/e ... Xz-AQc8ZH4)

Hello everybody,

maybe that's interesting for one or the other.

The flying skills decide about the destination:
In 2014, a team of biologists at Lake Constance (Germany) equipped young storks with mini transmitters that record positions and movements. The scientists have now investigated initial data on the migratory behaviour of birds - and after ten minutes they are able to predict whether an stork will land in Spain or Africa.

Unfortunately only available in German:

"Wir haben uns nur die ersten zehn Minuten, Viertelstunde von dem Flugverhalten angeschaut und konnten dann sagen: Ok, dieser Storch schlägt wenig mit den Flügeln. Das heißt, er wird wahrscheinlich ein Leitstorch sein und am Ende bis nach Afrika fliegen, während die anderen Störche, die viel mit den Flügeln schlagen, – schon in dieser kurze Zeit nur am Anfang des Zuges – nur bis nach Spanien fliegen.“
google translator help (for me personally is German very good  )

thank you very much - danke sehr Modi :2thumbsup: (I read more papers by Andrea Flack and also here they are links to her papers)

Good afternoon!
Hello modi and welcome :hi:

Very interesting .... great! :2thumbsup:

ICARUS stands for International Cooperation for Animal Research Using Space. As part of this research project, an antenna was installed at the International Space Station last August. It will in future receive the data from animal transmitters and forward it to a control center on the ground. The scientific operation should begin in early 2019.

Michi, good that you're fine :2thumbsup:

Hello, everyone
Hello, Abigyl. :hi:
Solo and Sova, thank you very much.
Michi, I am very happy to hear that you are fine! :D
Modi, many thanks for the info and welcome to the forum.
Treia, thanks for the wonderful pictures. :2thumbsup: I think I recognise some of them! ;-)
(Seeing the photo of our sweet little Päike is rather painful.)

Sorry. I'm not very active right now.
I do not feel very comfortable (flu or a cold) and I have a lot of worries with my old father.
He is in the hospital and gradually loses control of his body and his mind.

Good evening together,
I want to thank you all for todays reports and pictures about our storks! :2thumbsup:
Treia, thanks a lot for the beautiful pictures of Karl, Kati and their children! It‘s so nice to see them again, although we know about Päikes fate ...

Solo, thanks for the hint with the links! Good to know that.

Modi, welcome to the forum! :gathering:
Many thanks for the article! It‘s very interesting!

Anne :hi: , It is comprehensible that you have no or not much energy for the forum. Take care of yourself!
I wish you a quick recovery and much strength. It‘s surely very hard to see your father in such state and to handle with it. All the best for you!
