I wonder if the polish stork BS (2019) CNIG16 is still near our Karula?

Around 10:29 (UTC+2), Karula flew near the Damia Bridge

Image

The Damia Bridge (also Prince Muhammad Bridge), known in Israel as Gesher Adam, is a bridge over the Jordan River between the West Bank and Jordan. After 1991 it was used only for goods transported by truck between Israel, the West Bank and Jordan until its closure for security reasons sometime between 2002 and 2005 during the Second Intifada. As of 2014, the Israeli side is part of a closed military area.

Hello, Tatiana

Here you can follow the Polish black storks.
http://mapa.bocianimy.pl

And of course also on the "Black Stork Tracks" topic (by Hana).

CNIG16 is still on the Jordan River, but he/she moved more northwards.

Black Storks (Ciconia nigra) wintering in Northern Israel
Wim Van den Bossche
ABSTRACT: The Bet She'an and Hula Valleys in northern Israel are a very important migration bottleneck and wintering site for Black Storks. Not only 17000 Black Storks pass on autumn passage but also up to 1400 Black Storks wintered during the mid-1990s in the fishpond complexes of the Northern Valleys. Most storks stayed in the eastern Bet She'an Valley. Most of the young birds that wintered in Israel were late migrants; a high proportion was marked at northern breeding grounds and tagged storks showed a high fidelity. Local wintering storks arrived earlier every autumn until they were 4 to 5 years old. By the middle of October, most migrants had passed and most marked adults had arrived, while only 1 out of 11 wintering marked 1-st winter birds was present. The wintering population was composed of storks from all age groups; there were substantial yearly differences in the proportion of 1st and 2nd- winter birds. Almost no Black Storks stayed on the fishpond complexes during summer. Black Storks were mainly feeding in canals and on filled and drained ponds, where they looked for small living fish. Tilapia hybrids were the main prey. Young storks showed a preference for habitats where it was easy to catch fish. The type of fishponds, draining technique and yield had a significant effect on the number of wintering birds.

Hello everyone,

many thanks, Juta and Anne, for the trackermap, pictures from Karulas paths and all the interesting information. :2thumbsup:
I think I've seen a picture of the Damia bridge already earlier here in the forum. But an interesting story. Thanks, Anne!

Have a nice Sunday evening!

Hello Tatiana  , Karula and CNIG16 are no longer in the same area. CNIG16 flew a little up north, but he is still in the Jordan valley. Today he is near Kfar Ruppin.

Do you know the map of the tracked Polish storks? http://mapa.bocianimy.pl/
There you can follow CNIG16 and many other Black Storks.
But I admit that I have some problems with this map, because there are hardly any names of cities marked. At least not in the Jordan valley.

Edit:
Ups, now I see that Anne :hi: has answered this question already. I don't know how I could have missed that. :puzzled:

Hello, Michi

We both posted at exactly 5:19 pm. :D
Probably that's why you didn't see my post...
(And I added the picture and the study a bit later. I needed some time to prepare the pic and to find the article.)

Yes, it is quite 'complicated' that the Polish map hardly states any place names.

And I haven't refreshed the page before I answered Tatiana.

Thank you, Anne7, Michi, Solo, for your answers. :2thumbsup: It is interesting to know how our Кarula flies among other birds, to know if its route and behavior differs from other black storks... I can see that Кarula is not a lonely bird and that's fine. It is a pity that there are not enough photos of black storks from these places... maybe it's for the best, though... Our Karula knows no bounds. There are no obstacles for him. How good it is that there are friendly people living near the Jordan river who do not harm the birds! :D He is so happy between the farmers of Jordan and Palistina. The ridges of the mountains shelter from the big winds, in the valley between them flows a winding river, the climate is like in Paradise-neither hot nor cold.
