OK. That's a relief.

Thanks a lot, Solo and Hellem!

And here is Karula's Tracker map from today, November 11, between 05:18 and 09:02 (UTC+2 time)

Jo, I hope that it quickly becomes clear what the problem is, on your computer. :slap:

I found some other photos of Karula's area.
All 3 photos are from "Tal Nature Reserve"

The HaGoshrim Reservoir.

Could these be the ponds where Karula is fishing most of the time?
Did you see: DANGER MINES !

And if all fish are eaten, there are still these cuties to put on the menu.

I saw your photo!
I just wondered if the photo that I found (with title Tal Nature Reserve !) showed the same ponds, photographed from another location. And, if not, which ponds these could be. :puzzled:

Circling Radius
As I wanted to know what the circling radius is for BS, climbing up on a thermal, I did some research.

I found this very interesting study. It isn't very easy to understand (for me), but it is very informative.
https://arxiv.org/pdf/1012.0434.pdf

Thermal soaring flight of birds and UAVs

...Thermals are spatially and temporally localized parts of the atmosphere created by solar radiation heating the ground, typically moving upwards with a speed in the range of 1–10m/s. ...

...The soaring flight trajectory of the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) and the white stork (Ciconia ciconia) were recorded recently by GPS and were compared to the flight of paragliders and hang gliders...

Image

... It is known from measurements and theoretical calculations that thermals are not equally strong from the ground to the top. The vertical velocity profile depends on the actual weather conditions but usually, the middle part is stronger and it is weaker near the ground and at the top. As higher wing loading causes higher minimum sinking speed, birds with higher wing loading are not able to exploit the weaker top and bottom part of the thermal...

Image

...The calculated circling radius of the falcon (21.1m) and the stork (21.7m) were also in agreement with the observations and arguments in earlier studies, namely that the mean circling radius is linearly proportional to wing loading...

So:
- Storks soar upwards in circles with a diameter of ca. 43,4 m.
- They only use the middle (= strongest) part of a thermal.
- Thermals move upwards with a speed in the range of 1-10m/s.

kuhankeittäjä, I believe that you will like this study.
It is written for people who understand physics.

Hi, Sova!
I wanted to know how big the circle is in which BS climb up.
My curiosity takes me to these studies. Not a passion for physics. :-)
I also do not understand everything about these studies, but fortunately, my question has been answered.
A diameter of 40 - 45 m is not that much. I expected the circle would be wider.

Still no update on birdmap. :puzzled:

Hello Baska,
thanks a lot for the very nice video! It is amazing! All those cute little birds which most likely enjoy to take a rest. :loveshower: Even an owl was there! :D But: what is an owl doing at sea? Aren‘t they sedentary birds?!

Anne7 wrote: November 11th, 2018, 6:02 pm Still no update on birdmap. :puzzled:
But, thanks to the tracker maps we can see that Maru and Karula are still flying in their feeding areas. Thank god there‘s no need to worry.
BTW: I thought always that doing tracker maps would only be possible when there are also data at the birdmap. Obviously it isn‘t so?

Thanks a lot, Jo and Anne, for the new maps and all for todays reports and interesting pictures! :2thumbsup:

Hello, Michi
Ornitela apparently (automatically?) retrieves new data every 6 hours. (Not at the same time for Maru and Karula, though...)
Birdmap has to be updated (manually) by somebody, I think.
So, if we have no birdmap-update for a long(er) time (or if there are worries), we can now make a tracker map, on request.
