Oh heavens, what has happened, this is nothing that we expected and especially not that the culprit is a raccoon

Those of you who watched this live in the night must have been quite shocked, I am so sorry for you and hope you all feel a bit better meanwhile.

Stefan Brücher writes in the diary that this is the first verification of a raccoon predating on owlets
https://uhu.webcam.pixtura.de/beide-jun ... gefressen/

I don´t know how many raccoons are already sighted at all in the Eifel, in other areas of Germany they have already become very numerous ....

And there is also a post in the diary about the ringing of the owlets, but ....

Yes, the raccoon has become one of the main reasons for breeding losses. But the fox and the marten also live here, always a danger to the owlets. All through the years everything went well, only one broken egg. And Lotte was always there in case of danger. Still shocked and sad...

I'm still so sorry. I can't tell it my son. He would be so sad. :-( I think I tell him that the cam is broken.
Poor owlets. I feared the fox, but haven't even thought about a racoon.

you can't install something that will scare away such predators?
if there is a raccoon, he will eat it in the following years ...
he went downhill and the branches made it easier for him

why did the mother not react ?? she arrived an hour after all .. she was afraid?

Unfortunately was there. I know it is just nature and even Lotte and Leo raid nests but we get so attached to these birds not the ones being brought in. I'm so sad but this has happened on my other nests at times. Raccoons, eagles, and Great Horned Owls here in the States raid other nests an even each others. When I first came on these nests years ago I said I would watch the Good the Bad and the Ugly because it is Nature in the rawest.

The raccoon continued his meal in the evening.
22.38 Leo came with a mouse and called the owlets. He flew away with leftover, probably gave it to Lotte.

It is still unbelievable and horribly sad. One has the feeling that even the eagle owls do not realize what is going on. Image

Even though it's nature; it is different to watch the young owls grow and prepare for their lives every day. It makes you very concerned.

We are observers here and have no influence about setting of the camera or to decide to make changes to make the nest place safer.

Maintainers of the camera are people from EGE Eulen, I suggest to write an e-mail to them and describe your concept about changes that make sense for you to get the place safer.

You will find their contact data here: http://www.egeeulen.de/

About Lotte, the female, the mother --- the camera did not show where she was during the incident, so no one can tell that for sure.

Just my speculation about two possibilities -
1) she was farther away and could not see what happened at the nest
2) she was close and could see what happened, but decided that she could not save her owlets without risking to lose her own life und for that didn´t intervene

It took me a while to encourage myself to continue reporting and to be brave and check my recordings ....

Still from 17. May, when life was normal on the ledge ...

Now video clips from 18. May, the day everything changed on the ledge

This is the first time that I am happy, that I had again a bug in my recordings and thatwith no sound. It is horrible enough to watch this without sound, don´t want to imagine when there was also sound...

Caution! Graphic content!
Please think twice whether you want to watch these videos at all, especially when you are a softhearted and sensible person!
