Lotte eats from the remnants of the younger owlet (I think it is), she even swallows again a leg with a ring and in the end places the remnants in the hind larder

Leo wants to deliver a rat to the nest, but no one there to take it.
He makes these chuckling sounds he ususally makes when he offers food to the owlets.
The rat is placed in the hind larder and he leaves with some feathered remnants.
According to the sounds he hands it over to Lotte outside

Somehow we have to learn to deal with it, don´t we? With all the emptied nests and destroyed clutches in the last two, three years

But no matter how often one will see it, it will hurt every time Image

At least not here at this nest. We already had foxes and martens who were highly interested and made attempts to come closer to the nest, but every time Lotte was at the place and scared them away.

Until now we never saw a raccoon here .....

MargoMo wrote: May 18th, 2021, 10:34 pm Unfortunately was there. I know it is just nature and even Lotte and Leo raid nests but we get so attached to these birds not the ones being brought in. I'm so sad but this has happened on my other nests at times. Raccoons, eagles, and Great Horned Owls here in the States raid other nests an even each others. When I first came on these nests years ago I said I would watch the Good the Bad and the Ugly because it is Nature in the rawest.
This is an excellent term to describe what it means "to take the whole thing as it is", I hope I will remeber this term the next time I need it .... :dunno:

On the webpage of EGE Eulen is a hint about a 5-minute-long video about Stefan Brücher on tour to ring owlets, it was shown in German TV ZDF
In German only, but also without understanding it is interesting to watch
https://www.zdf.de/nachrichten/drehsche ... r-100.html

And a nice trailer, also showing some of the work of EGE Eulen

Thank you, Bea!
Is the rat still there? I wonder if Lotte will try to catch the intruder to defend her nest. She chased the marten too.

Yes, I think the rat is still there, in the right side larder.

I wonder whether Lotte (coming from outside) would attack the raccoon there in the nest corner and how high her chances were to be successful without becoming injured herself.

But maybe another place - another time? :whistling:

From size raccoons surely would fit in Eagle Owl´s range of prey, similar to foxes I think.

Hi all,
New to the forum, 2nd year to watching the cam..wish I had discovered it at a happier time  I understand that these things happen, but my boyfriend and I are so incredibly sad! I checked the blog yesterday at work when I did not see any owl activity and just froze...what a big shock. Watched the video this morning for some closure and was happy that it did not have sound. It is strange how much you can feel about a little owl family on the other side of the world. Rest in peace little ones.

Hello,
the other night I was also so scared when I saw the racoon eating.
But I was glad that I was "too late"....
(Especially because there were two chicks)
So far I only heard of egg robbery by raccoons in eagle owl nests eg in Thueringer forest.
I did not think that they also fetch chicks; i thought that adult eagle owls would be defensible enough to prevent it.

I guess the old ones weren't there at all?
Or chased off by the racoon?
I dare not look the video.
Would like to know if the predator waited until there was no adult bird, or if he happened to be there when the chicks were alone.
Or whether Lotte fled when he appeared.

@Bea
No idea how learn to deal with it.
I accept it ...but
I always have to think of the litte one that sat next to it
*Please don't feed the trolls!*

I fear nobody can tell us all that for sure, the cam was focussed on the owlets and not on outside areas.

What do you all think, was this an adult raccoon? I began to wonder whether it was an adolescent ... :puzzled:

@Biker
The little one looked totally helpless and as if it not knew at all what was going on - hard to look at that ... don´t do it when you are not really sure that you want to see it.
