24. April

Lotte left at 00:24, back at 01:48 (I think she had nothing with her ) and out again at 02:14

03:35
Leo delivers a mouse and one owlet could handle it and swallowed it whole
He inspected the larder again - then Lotte is coming home and he prefers to leave :D
One owlet is making some self-service with a piece of leftovers (rabbit?)

Lotte came home and I think she had some prey in her beak and placed it in the larder. Unfortunately one can´t see what it is.

She left at 04:47 and returned at 06:05

I hope it was the only "crisis" I had this season in front of this online nest :rotf:
Hi Lubaska,
thank you for your reply and informations. Yes, the younger the owlets were the bigger are the worries. I know that kind of "panic" or "heart attack" as well. :-)
Last night I was a bit afraid also because of the foxes in the near. But thank god all went well.

Have a nice day all!

Hi.
I have watched this pair for several years.
It seems to me that Lotte does not like Leo to be close to the youngsters.
Is this behaviour just Lotte, or are the males a risk to the youngsters? :puzzled:

Hi ColinA :hi:

For me it looks as if he would like so much handing the food over to the owlets by himself :D

I don´t think that he is a risk to the youngsters or that Lotte takes him as a risk for the owlets.
For me it looks more that Lotte wants to have the control about food and feedings.

Can´t say how these roles are handled on other nests, at other couples. It is only my impression here on this nest, have no compare.

Maybe others know more about it?

I agree with Bea.
As for me I do not think that Leo is a danger for babies.
I think that he does not have a right gene for feeding (and I guess majority of Uhu s male are the same). He is such an innocent when he comes and tries to crush into baby.s beak a prey. I love these scenes. And on other hand Lotte has got well developed gene for feeding and she is a Boss in the nest so she always loudly talks, takes a prey from him and send him to hunt for another one :)

There were times when I was nervous because of he has brought a food very rarely. This season I feel much more relaxed.

:hi:
The same kind of behaviour I have noticed in Danish Eagle Owl nest and some years ago in Swedish nest. So I think it's usual behavior of this species.

A beautiful closeup of owlets. It is only this year that we can appreciate the work of Stefan Brücher when replacing wiring for fiber optic (and probably also cameras).

Last night at 23:00 Leo flew in so silent, that Lotte haven't noticed his arrival.
She got scared, but took a mouse from Leo. Later, under mom's belly, bigger owlet took care of a mouse 8-)

Big morning eyes

The little one (younger owlet) has tried to gulp a mouse... I am not sure if it was successful. Sorry for a bad quality.

Lotte returned with a mouse. At 23:57 one owlets tries some self-feeding, but is not successful, maybe not even hungry enough at that time. Lotte puts the mouse in the hind larder for later.
