I stopped watching this cam, when SE22 was the third day without food. Later, I only read the updates. It was getting worse and worse. I have never heard of a sea eaglets siblicide at the age of 1 month.

RIP sweet SE22, your fate was cruel from hatching.

I heard about this nest only after the eaglet was killed. Then I read about those eagles and it turned out that cainism occures in their nest pretty often and only 30% of younger chicks survive. It is better than in LSE/GSE nests but also a very small chance.

Off on adventures. We are having troubles with the live stream, but 21 has been seen flying out over the river, before returning "home" to the forest again. The eaglet seemed to manage in spite of the escorting currawongs, ravens or magpies. Thanks Cathy for the pictures.

This is part of the vet's report on SE21. We are not releasing the details of the organisation caring for her.
For those who don't know, Frounce/Trichomonas is the infection that SE13 died from. It is highly treatable - if you are able to orally administer the anti-biotics.

As I said, this nest and the area there is not really good...no season without problems, so sad to read.

New SE21 update, copied over from facebook:

SE21 UPDATE - 9th December, 2018

SE21 is doing well. She is now eating a variety of food, including bream, kangaroo and mullet. No specific information on the Trichomoniasis - regarding whether treatment is ongoing or complete.

There is a check-up with the vet on Tuesday, after which we hope to have some more details of her progress. Currently she is able to move about her enclosure, is moving her injured wing but does not yet have full use. This is in line with the expectation following initial assessment by the vet.

SE21 UPDATE - 12th December, 2018

GOOD NEWS - from the vet yesterday, despite her wing still drooping, SE21 has had some small test flights and is learning to fly again.

The soft tissue injury and skin are healing well and will need at least another 2-4 weeks for the wounds to heal.

The Trichomonas infection affecting her mouth, tongue and pharynx also appears to be healing with the mouth and tongue clear of lesions.

The vet is quietly optimistic that SE21 should be suitable for release into the wild.

Update on SE 21 and questions answered

Today was a big day for her.

In true form she sat patiently and quietly in her current accomodation while next door ace new helper Adele and I proved there is nothing a girl with a mind set on a mission can’t achieve!

We revamped the previous home of a Brown Falcon, put up new (very heavy) perches, scrubbed, disinfected, raked, swore (me when I hit my head), did some serious ladder work (Adele) and then opened the adjoining doors 3 hours later to allow SE21 to move around in twice the space she was utilising up until now.

She continues to be a model patient, loves her food and tolerates me cleaning her aviary without fuss. ...

Operation Release SE21 (or goodbye Essie - live well)

I thought I would give all Essie's followers and the people who care so much about her a glimpse into the lead up of her release plans for tomorrow.

I have just released another WTE this evening, and while I was down at the free flight I took a couple of quick pics of what I hope will be the last ones of Essie taken in captivity.The one of her flying is the best I can do with my camera, but it shows me for the hundredth time how symmetrical her wings/feathers are when she gets momentum.

So..... here we go ....

I hope for a better season

Both eggs have now hatched! The first on Friday (7/26) at 20:38 cam time, the second this morning (7/28) at 5:54 (official times posted here). So that's about a 33-hour difference between the two chicks. Assuming a stable food situation, that may give some hope of avoiding serious (or at least fatal) sibling aggression at this nest this year.

(FYI The control panel at the bottom is from the cam computer's screen, not mine. At least they finally got rid of the radio interference on the mic.)

I'm glad to see two babies...hopefully it runs this season, my fingers are crossed!
