Is this a typical characteristic of the way eagles eat a carcass -- making a channel -- or is this partially because they are getting frozen chunks.
(with luck I have another capture of y... and beautiful fierce talons)

Yes he jumped off the food and then wandered in the trees and stood their looking around for a while. I am not sure if he then flew off or what. I got several captures of the standing and looking -- which I will post tomorrow, if they do not disappear while I am sleeping. I posted one -- just in case, but I am too tired to stay up.

an amazing sight
the WTEs seems to feel unsecure with a GE around - I think that´s why they all suddenly disappeared, also the ravens made a lot of noise and flew around the time for the GEs arrival. The GE is possibly not very close now where the WTEs have returned to meat - or perhaps still nearby somewhere........ they seem still to be alert
