Re: Special pictures from the New Webcam 2012

Post by ame »

i took some screencaptures from Fireblade's video to show this. the one on the right is a sub-adult.
Image

... who has a mostly white tail already.
Image

the other young eagle had the horseshoe pattern on the chest.
Image

a later picture at 15.16 shows that there were altogether 4 eagles present: three on the ground and one in air. i think it's the adult who is flying and two juveniles and a sub-adult on the ground. the latter has still some dark on the beak but otherwise it's rather blond.

the second eagle on the right seems to have some dark on the beak (but it is almost too dark to see properly).

at 10.41 a ringed young bird. on right foot blue over white: Estonia, with markings M944. the left foot is too dark to see more than 8 on the lower ring.

obviously red over blue could not be right: it would have meant a 18-years old bird with youngster-plumage!
Renno commented this bird at 12.02.
renno wrote:.... 1st winter WTE with rings D583+M944 I ringed in north-Estonia Lahemaa National Park in 4th of June 2011. This bird in born about 130km from the feeding place. She is most probably female and she had also brother in the nest last summer. ...
so what seemed to be darkblue was actually black. Renno had taken picture od this bird and its brother when he ringed them:

Renno's comments on this bird at 13.31:
renno wrote:This bird with ring B279 is born in 2010 somewhere in SW-Finland, most probably somewhere on Turku islands. We will forward this observation to Finnish Ringing Centre. We all saw this bird here also last winter, last time exactly year ago - 20th Jan 2011!
later on Jan 24th Renno corrected the year:
renno wrote: This is our old friend from SW-Finland born in 2009. Few days ago I mistakenly wrote that this bird was born in 2010 but 2009 is correct year (3rd winter bird). We saw this bird last time three days ago.

here is a remarkable video recorded by Fleur. i took some screencaptures from it for illustration.
Fleur wrote:
in the beginning one eagle takes off, leaving three eagles on the ground: one young one on the left and two adults further back on the right. (i think the adult has some food down in its claws inside the snow.)
Image

then a young eagle crashlands on the back of the other adult.
Image

they squel a little but then the adult takes two-three steps aside and stays there quite calmly (but doesn't look exactly happy). i think Gaby got a picture of this. there the young eagle has spread its wings. it looks very much like something we have often seen at Linda's and Sulev's nest: big eaglet grabs food from a parent and then covers it with its wings to protect the food from the sibling. i have been wondering: could this be a family? would an adult eagle tolerate this kind of behaviour from a strange young eagle? :puzzled:
maybe some expert could have a look at this video and give us comments. :help:

in the dusk another ringed young bird. the marks were impossible to read. even the colours are ambiguous. now i even disagree with myself: today i'd say it's black over blue, which would mean 2009.
ame wrote:on the left foot a dark band on top (red?) and white/silver below but i can't read numbers.
Image
the number on the lower ring could be 19? :puzzled: ... impossible to see. :faint:
(this could be B279 which was seen in better light earlier.)

the last eagle left the feeding ground at 16.51.

on the whole the maximum number of eagles seen at the same time was six and all of these were young eagles. besides them a couple of adults eagles were seen.

the rings of two eagles were read
  • red over black D583 (2011) from Estonia
black over blue B279 (2009?) from SW (coastal) Finland
metal over red A482 (2008) from Estonia

Renno's comment on the catch on Jan 22nd (at 12.51)
renno wrote:... This new bird is born in 2007 somewhere in central Finland (lake districts). We will send the info to Finnish Ringing Centre.

Today there are at least 10 different birds so far based on the ages, including three ringed Estonian and one Finnish bird. Estonians we have seen before:
1. 1W nr D583 (born in Lahemaa National Park 2011)
2. 4W nr A479 (born on Vormsi island 2008)
3. 4W nr A482 (born in western Hiuumaa 2008)
