It can happen,that they give up the brood, when they think that they cannot feed the chicks. It was much too hot and dry.
I have to think of what Maris S wrote ..

they youngest is 9 days old, the eldest 12! :bow:

​Parents stay normally 3-4 week on nest for guarding the chicks,
if they leave the chicks earlier, like here, it is a sign of a lack of food
