WHERE are the parents? Is this normal? Have they abandoned the nest and their offspring? (Sorry if those are silly questions. Next year I'll know better.

21:50 Looks like Zulika.

At 21:12 He was visible on the upper branch. He might be there till now because we saw them always together at night on the nest or outside. I don't think she'll stay alone here.

According to the project Save the black storks our Zīļuka has got an official "surname"/name/ as well as other black stork girls in the project:

Jaunjelgava district- UPENE, our Zīļuka
Kārsava district - FEJA,
Talsi district district - MEIJA,
Vecumnieki district - SARMA,
Nereta district - AUSMA.

P.S. Upene means "black currant", berry.

The most interesting will be follow their migration back from the South. As you remember Tõnn didn't return in his birthplace and chose Finland, Norway and Sweden. Young storks may settle not in Latvia but also in Lietuva, Belarus or Poland.

asteria, I think the first questions are:

How many of them will reach Africa?
How many of them will survive the first winter?

Urmas had four tagged young black storks in 2008.
None of them lived in October 2008. :(

Mid, Priidupoeg, Ossipoeg and Raivopoeg
Priidupoeg covered longest migration route among tagged juveniles.
Priidu's son died the evening of October 7. in Saudi Arabia. :(

I know that, add also two Raivo's chicks in 2010 that didn't survive but Tonn did and we followed him five years while his transmitter worked.
