Tonight between 22:39 and 3:49 when the cam was dark, occurred predator attack to the nest. Chick died
Dr.Bergmanis think that attacked marten or one of the large owls, such Ural owl.
All of us today is a very sad day

Grieta
Thank you for help with the translation.

And I am very sorry the program had two such disasters, but at least the rescued chick from the other nest is doing well.

Dear Friends, our forumist Kaaposc translated for you all Dr.U. Bergmanis comment:

Good morning, watchers!
Unfortunately Grieta's and Gints' baby has died overnight. This morning I started to watch on-line at 05:30, the nest was already empty. I went to the forest immediately to look for baby, maybe he had fallen out of the nest. I found nothing under the nest, surroundings is clear. With high confidence I can say it was eaten by some predator - either marten or some large owl (Ural owl? Eagle-owls do not live there). Visibility let me follow events till 22:39 - Grieta was warming the baby, but looked around very worried, usually she sleeps with her head under her wing. She wasn't looking down, she was looking about the level of the nest, to different sides. It tells the predator was in the trees. In the morning Grieta was seen at 3:49, after a while she stood up, but baby was no more. It means drama happened overnight. Very sad, but it is out of our power to influence the processes programmed by the nature. I can only comfort you that Grieta, Gints and all the other animals know that not all of their offspring survive. Mētra was unlucky with eggs, Grieta's baby passed away in the first days of it's life. Maybe this time some other baby got food and now takes a nap with his tummy full. Even big baby can simply fall out of the nest or to die while migrating to wintering sites. It's important that nesting places are intact, next spring birds will choose them again, there will be rutting and mating, the eggs will be laid and, if lucky, a new baby will be brought up. I know we all are very sad, but cheer up, let's watch Estonian eagles and wait for new spring!

With regards -
Uģis

Hello Grieta,

thanks for showing us the translation of Dr. Bergmanis text - specially to Kaaposc, too ....

What a sad end

So we can only hope for the future, hope that the birds will have a good summer and will get through winter well - and that the new spring will bring better times for them ...

This is too sad, I am very sorry for the misfortune of Grieta and Gints in this summer. I loved to watch them since 2009. I am thankful for all people who have participated for the fortune of the Latvian Lesser Spotted Eagles.

Ooh , such sadness.
All the more reason to be grateful and happy about the young birds that do fledge.

This time of year is full of excitement, shocks, sadness, elation and sometimes frustration, as we watch our favourite birds.

Thank you so much Grieta and Kaaposc for making the translation of Dr. Bergmanis text and posting it here! It is very sad what happened, but we can't change it - we can't sit next to the nest and chase away all intruders, though sometimes one feels like doing it!
I have checked on the German partner site, today morning there was a message saying unforeseen trouble was happening and they will try to find out, now they have a page reporting the tragedies in the two nests http://www.deutschewildtierstiftung.de/ ... gefressen/
I have just come home, so I have not yet checked - are there any news of Grieta and Gint? Especially Grieta, was she hurt?

We hope for a new chance next year!

Watching an empty nest from 15.30 (cam time), more than an hour. Very loud, strange noises. Has anyone disassembled the camera?

I think the camera was turned off.

Asked a question about that disaster in Expert Answers topic. I wonder if there were any ppl(non speacialists but some strangers), who knew the exact place of that camera. One thing still seems to be very strange: not a single trace of fight, no feathers or blood. It means that Grieta wasn't in the nest when the predator came. Can it be that the chick was just stolen by some human thief while the camera didn't show?

I asked this question Ugis. Ugis says - LSE is not night birds, so when an attack occurs at night, Grieta instinctively flew away from the nest. Likely that daylight Grieta initiated the fight.

About the strange noises. As I understood the GG camera was a bit faulty. It's sound was either not working at all or generated some electronic buzz. That is why it is hard to tell what happened during night, one can not judge that from this camera's sounds.

Yesterday to the German forests were transported 15 young LSE from Latvia
Including the eagle, which hatch in Metra's and Macho nest. Ugis says that the eagle grew up fine and is one of the strongest of all 15 eagles

Oh that is indeed good news and gives sort of a happy ending to a very sad story! Seeing Tormi growing up I had to think of that poor chick very often and hoped that it did well!
Thanks Grieta for letting us know! And thanks to the team of Dr. Bergmanis for doing it so well! Maybe one day I get the chance to travel to North-East Germany and manage to see some eagles there, and who knows ... ?
