April 30

KL was there for quite some time in the morning, working on the nest and trying the nest bowl

Thank you, Felis!
I read in the latvian forum that egg laying happens ca 10 - 14 days after first mating, and first mating between KL and Betins was observed 26. April. They can expect first egg, if it will be an egg of course, at the end of this week, or in the beginning of next. If they still are by the nest. (if my translation is correct, of course) Fingers crossed!

Both were on the nest, now KL is sitting and calling. No egg yet ... but the nest looks ready for it!

Edit: something caught her attention and she went off, and now sound of mating can be heard

Slowly I do get a feeling that they have given up on this nest and were also working on a second one. I have seen neither the last two days.

Today evening an eagle looking younger with dark eyes spent a long time on the nest, nobody came and challenged him/her, although he/she also called a few times

It would be a pity if they don't choose this nest, it is nice to watch. Hopefully one of the other 3 nests will be occupied...

Two of the four nests were not even used, so no chance there at all, and for the two nests which were decorated, the time window is closing now, or is actually already closed. I have not much hope left now.

So sorry to hear that. I love these birds so much. I fear they haven't much chance of survival in the long term.

For the moment the population in Eastern Europe and Russia is not threatened. Only the populations of the western fringe, like Germany, is on the red list. Main problem like for most animals, birds, insects etc. is the loss of habitat. Spotted Eagles are specialists and can't survive in the landscape our industrial agriculture has created over the last few years. For the moment countries like Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia can provide the necessary landscape, question is for how long?

Thank you for this information Felis. It is a pity that there probably will be no nest this year. I was looking forward to it. It must be especially disappointing for the specialists who did all the work of installing the cameras.
Better luck next year!

I still keep an eye on these nests- the eagles are around and sometimes visit. Othertimes you can just hear them. I love the sounds of this forest.

27.Sep.
Good Morning :hi:

Yesterday in the evening on the German station RBB a broadcast about lesser spotted eagle was stared out. Very, very interesting. It has been shown a few times the Latvian (here) nest. But yes .... it is in German.
