I hope you don't mind, I captured this heartbreaking moment:
"The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” - Robert Swan Obe, the first man in history to walk to both the North and South Poles.

thank you for the reports!
we had an interesting visitor yesterday afternoon, an insect with yellow spots in the dark back section of the body. (actually there were a lot of insects at the nest yesterday, including a harvestman. the weather must have been warm.)
this was not a wasp. i thought it might be a hover fly and sent this picture to a friend of mine who is an expert in hover flies. i thought i would get an answer in return mail. it turned out not to be the case. this wasn't a trivial problem after all.
this is the best picture i got of this insect.
my friend told me that this was perhaps not even a local insect but travelled from who knows from how far (or blown by the southerly winds which have made the weather so warm).
he had sent the picture to another specialist. let's hope that it's possible to find out something more about this fellow.
this is the video of this insect.
here is the harvestman who walked by the lens at 9:45.

thank you Sonchik!
this is the same link which Mārtiņš D posted in DDF on Oct 31 2021 at 20:08.

the GT-translation of the lines which i marked blue in the post by Mārtiņš D are a little mysterious (again):
"Will the mystical Durbe bird finally be remembered?" (i think this should be 'is the mystery bird of Durbe finally identified?'
and:
"Link to the observation below. " (i think this means the answer, not an observation )
any way, Ieva Mārdega writes in DDF that our mystery bird is "krauklis" = the raven. i got the same answer on Sep 6th and 7th 2017 in xenocanto when i had posted the mystery call.
Cedric Mroczko and Herman van der Meer thought that the bird making the mystery calls is a raven (Corvus corax).
https://www.xeno-canto.org/forum/topic/20369
i was happy with this answer for a long time but still wanted to see a raven making these calls. this late summer and autumn i have, however, begun to suspect that perhaps it's a hooded crow after all. this is because i have never heard normal raven's voices in connections with these mystery calls. they don't seem to be present in the forest when someone calls like this. instead i have heard normal crow's voices together with the mystery calls, either a little before or a little after the mystery calls. this is what has made me suspicious.
i still want to see who calls like this.

15:10 Mr L flew in with a stick (?)
15:11 Milda flew in. she went to the top branch. Mr L started to work. he still has a lot of work to do before he has tamed the very complicated stick which he brought in the morning at 9:08.
