8:33 a bird talked loud nearby. it reminded me of a jackdaw but i'm not sure. then i think i perhaps heard eagle's calls from far.

yes, the bird on the top really sounded like a jay.
9:01 again a jay very near. too near!
9:01:52 a jay flew to the top.
then on the nest. then the jay flew to the left side of the camera.
there are too many jays too near! :rotf:
the jay nearby began to talk softly. he/she flew to the right branch.
9:03 he/she flew away but there were still many jays nearby.

... i need you-know-what. Image

10:29 - 10:31 a jay called too loud too near again. :slap:
before he/she arrived a grey-headed woodpecker called nearby.
be careful with the volume.

10:46 a little bird rustling under the nest on the right side. then a great tit flew to the left branch and then flew up on the left. a great tit talked.

11:50:15 the nuthatch peeked in the front left corner.

then the nuthatch flew by in front of the camera.
11:50:22 two nuthatches chased each other.

13:00 a jay on the left branches and more in the forest. the jay was really very upset about something. i wonder what it was. not even a sparrowhawk makes such a reaction.
the noise they make... :faint:

What a fantastic nest bowl! These two must be "Swabian" at heart (I refer to the notorious "Swabian Hausfrau", which is a quite nice stereotype describing the qualities of a true "hausfrau" (housewife) in South West Germany, also regarding the tidiness and cleanliness of her home...if you compare it to the nest bowl in Sliteres, well, well! Of course, it all depends on the material they can get to make their nests, but Sliteres looks very crammed compared to Durbe. So, maybe this also shows how individual these eagles are concerning their preferences of nest material(s). Is that so?

i guess that their preference is for the closest available nest material. they are lazy and choose what they can find as close as possible. sticks are best naturally.
Johan Wilgohs writes in his thesis ("The white-tailed eagle Haliaëtus Albicilla Albicilla (Linné) in Norway", 1961, p. 140)
"Generally nests are made from materials that are readily available near the eyries. However, in some places, particularly on remote and barren off-shore islets, eagles have to use what they can find, seaweeds, driftwood, and sometimes fairly unsuitable things from the strandline, such as fits of fishing gear. Glass and metal floats and even sheep skeletons have been used in Nord-Frøya and Vega (p.c.)"

i can imagine that modern eagle nests in these remote islands and Iceland and Greenland quite well may contain pieces of plastic garden chairs, running shoes and yellow rubber ducks.

If I may say so, that was a very efficient morning visit by Milda and Mr L. today.
The nest bowl looks really more structured and rounder now than before, with those two big, slightly bend sticks they placed one at the south rim, the other at the north rim.
It's been my impression that they do not work too well together when they're both in the nest.
But like this morning, coming in separately, each bringing its own stick and placing it promptly and neatly where it fits - like true architects!

18:14:55 sound of big wings and someone landed on the top, out of sight unfortunately.
thank you Sigitinjka N for the observation!
bobby in DDF saw a tip of a wing at the arrival, too.
https://forums.dabasdati.lv/viewtopic.p ... fd#p301692

18:17:14 an eagle flew away from the top. the wing was visible in the top right corner.
Digna125 reported this. thank you to you, too!

Sigitinjka N heard something at 19.30: "pēkšķinātājs arī tepat vien ir".
GT translates this as " The shaker is here too". i wonder what that can be...? the translation to Finnish didn't make any more sense. :puzzled:
maybe it was this: the bird with the mystery call.
yes, the Latvian called it a "squawker". they thought it was a mallard.

i heard some voices from the camera while i was in another room.
19:57:05 a pygmy owl called rather near.

20:14 a tawny owl female called.
20:17 again. this time there were perhaps two owls. there were enough calls for two owls.

also Digna125 reported these calls in the chat. thank you!
