aha! in that case it was probably 'only' a male great spotted woodpecker (D. major).lispet wrote:The wood-pecker had a very red cap.
-'only' a D. major because it is so very familiar to us Finns. a whitebacked D. leucotos would be rare and special for us.

I think so. I watched from 08:30 quite a while and nothing happened.ame wrote:was that it for this morning? only three trips? or were there four actually: three by male and one for female?

yes and the picture froze again. it's like the camera could not handle too much action.
edit: now i have some order in my pictures and videos.
i didn't get anything on the male coming so i don't know if he brought anything. -i think he had a small stick after all...
the female arrived right after him and she had a bigger stick.
they nearly crash-landed.

the female left at 11:37 (i saw it later on the Pontu video). here are her tailmarks.
the latter of them disappeared at 11:40. it was the male. fortunately i have his departure on the video and i was able to take a snapshot of him leaving.
here are his tailmarks. they are rather small spots.
my videos were so choppy and fuzzy that i'll replace them with a Pontu clip.
the male comes first with a twig. the female arrives soon after him with the stick. then the male is busy arranging sticks around the nest. the female leaves and then the male was mostly just standing there and watching out.
then he just disappeared from my camera and video at 11:39.
here's a Pontu clip instead:

my pictures are miserably poor.
they came one after the other and landed almost on top of each other. then the female left first and after a while the male. but did they bring anything?
the female brought a stick.
now there is a talkative flock of birds nearby.
maybe they were siskins?

14:41 some eagle calls, shortly this time.
a minute later more calls. both times too short for recordings.

16:01 i heard some rutsling to the other room and came to look: an eagle had landed.
he worked a little with the furnishings and then he just stood there silently, looking around.
in the Pontu clip one can see that the male brought some hay with him.

Amsel, take a look here:
viewtopic.php?p=240260#p240260
i took an enlarged crop of the Pontu picture at 16:06. it maybe 06 on the lower line.
an even more enlarged picture of the rings. it looks like 04, doesn't it? ... definately maybe.
here's a slowmotion clip of the male standing on the rim of the nest, showing his rings. it doesn't much help...
a black woodpecker called and a little earlier there was a siren's sound, an ambulance or a police car or a fire engine.

the male was in the nest again at 17:33. i didn't hear him come.
he was already in the 17:32 Pontu picture. Pontu pictures give give wider view around the forest than the live-cam picture.

most of the time he just stood on the front rim at looked around.
he took off at 17:37. his tailmarks seem to be big hearts like Linda's.
the departure is missing in the end of my own recording so i've replaced it with a Pontu clip.
later there was a loud CRACK! in the forest. after that nothing.
soon after this the camera turned off. the last Pontu picture is taken at. 17:46.

Nice video at twilight time, thank you Ame! He looks very thoughtful
Maybe we catch the markings one day, fortunately he comes to this camera side of the nest as well.
