Re: Latvian WTE nest webcamera: Juras-Erglis 2014
10:15 the male brought yet another stick and worked alone in the nest.
after a while of working the male left at 10:18.
i like these two because it's easy to se who is who. the Lithuanian ring is so colourful that it can be almost always be seen well if the male holds his leg in sight. the left leg is more difficult. it's also relative easy to spot right away the bare legs of the female.
they were working so quietly all morning. i was expecting to see a mating, too, and that means a lot of calling, but no. neither said a word and showed no inclination to mating.
did anyone observe anything? i wasn't watching all the time...

i've been thinking about names for these two... it is customary that the members from the homecountry of the nest have the privilage of naming the inhabitants of the nest. this time is little different: we know that the male was born in Lithuania. so i have a proposition: how about if our Lithuanian members get the right to give name to the male and our Latvian members give a name for the female?
opinions?

i'll add here some of the shots which i took in the morning.
at 9:17 they were sitting side by side, the much smaller male on the left.
9:34 the female looks much bigger than the male even though her distance from the camera is larger (well, not much larger distance).
10:11 slender male, BIG Lady

then a few pictures of the tailmarks.
9:21 the female (not a very clear picture, but she didn't give better poses)
9:32 the male. these are slightly better.
or are they?
they have rather similar marks so it would be nearly impossible to tell them apart without the rings.
(though the male has a flat-forehead-hairdo and the female often has more puffed-up look.)

was there an intruder in the end? i saw that Mrs Eagle was leaving, then picture went green and i herad them beginning to call. when picture came back both were gone and the yelling stopped.
and after they were gone the camera has worked perfectly.
EDIT: i made a Pontu clip later and there the sounds are alright.
the calling after the eagles left the nest were mating calls, at 17:45!
this is the first observed time they mated.

No intruder, one left after the other and then they were calling nearby. I have a video - but probably not the best qualitiy - it is loading right now.

It is loaded - but I didn´t check it before, I hope the callings are on it. If not ---> blame it on the tube and VLC
Edit: I watched it now and the calls are on the video - but it is not synchronous with the video
Eagles are still on the nest when the calls can be heard, but in real time they took off one after the other and a bit later began to call.

a female whitebacked wood-pecker? (Dendrocopos leucotos)
females don't have a red cap. whitebacks have stripy backs. this does not have that, it's got large white patches.
http://www.lintukuva.fi/lajikuvat/denleu/index.php
or is it just a female great spotted woodpecker? (Dendrocopos major)? they have a small red spot in the back of the head.
http://www.lintukuva.fi/lajikuvat/denmaj/index.php
or is it a female middle spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos medius)? they have pink caps but maybe the woodpecker in Lispet's picture is hiding her head. (i can't figure out how it is holding its head...)
http://www.lintukuva.fi/lajikuvat/denmed/index.php
in those pictures there seem to be males first. both males in leucotos and major have a red cap.
funny names these Dendrocopos' have. Denrdocopos sounds like woodpecker and the species names are major, medius and minor, i.e. bigger, medium and smaller.
- so this is the little carpenter who has been tapping near the nest every day.
at 8:12 i heard a short eagle call, too short for recording. then again at 8:39 the eagle called more. i missed only the first call.
i haven't seen anyone but i haven't been watching. they have made no voices atthe nest so far so someone may have been here without me noticing it.

10:10 male came again and again the picture froze.
it seems that he brought a fairly small stick (not a big log).
he left at 10:14:02. he almost without track again but he left a track of white tail in the video.
SORRY for the four picture elements in this post!
as you may remember it is advisable that
one post should not contain more than three picture elements.
five is the absolute limit which should not be exceeded.
if you have more pictures make two posts. it is best to try to limit the number to three, because more than that make reading of forum pages difficult with smartphones.
