i'm afraid that the chicks will have plenty of time to hit each other during feedings yet. :slap:
it will begin in a few days, next week. they are still too young.

i get a bit shocked every time i see that b-word.
how about 'hitting each other'? beating? that's shorter. or 'fighting'?
or 'beaking'? although i think that 'beaking' is not a proper word in English. the spell checker complains about it... :dunno:
any way i think that 'beaking' would describe rather well what it is about: "hitting with the beak". (the English do invent new words in this way, take Brexit as an example).

8:57 Milda began to eat and feed.

Image

8:59:23 the bigger pecked the smaller. :slap:
Image

9:00:33 again. they are not too young.

9:01 Milda covered the babies and the egg.

They are not to young for pecking. I saw it in other nests too.

10:00 Milda called at someone in the sky. she didn't sound friendly so i guess that she is not looking at Raimis, at least not alone him.
she was like a bittern.
Image

Milda has lifted the empty egg shell half aside. ... aha, i see that Liz already wrote that. 8-)

10:37 Milda called at someone with an angry voice.
someone flew by. a crow?
it was a dark bird against the sky. in the last picture the back of the bird looked more grey than black. i guess it was rather a crow than a raven.

Number 2 hit Number 1 several times in the back of its head. :slap:
i wonder what Milda was like in their age. she pecks Raimis so hard even now... 8-)

yes, i found it!
thank you Sonchik!

i have been wondering how the chicks can be such perfect fluffy balls already on the first time we see them. for example yesterday it didn't take long from the lid opening till the chick was mostly free from the shell. bird chicks should be wet (ans thus not very pretty) when they come out. then it takes some time before they become dry and look like 'normal' pretty chicks. these chicks seem to emerge dry from the egg. it's a mystery to me.

11:30 feeding. the chicks were biting and wrestling.
11:33:06 the smaller fell topsy-turvy on its back. :rotf:
it was holding some straws with it claws to remain balance but the straws failed.
Image

then the chick rolled to the other side of the egg but still could not get up right away. when it finally got it hit the sibling. the fall was its fault, naturally.
actually both seemed to exchange punches.

then more beaking. the little one is certainly not any weaker than the bigger in this respect.
11:29 -> the feeding.

12:34 Milda got up and went to toilet. chicks were watching and learning. :whistling:
Image

mega2 has an astonishing picture of this. it's like a balloon! :rotf:
https://forums.dabasdati.lv/viewtopic.p ... 65#p215265
if you saw only this what would you think it was?
Image

then Milda began to feed.
12:36 the chicks were measuring their necks: whose neck is tallest?
12:37 the little one hit the bigger during feeding. the bigger lay down behind the egg and stayed hiding for a while.
12:40 Milda finished feeding. then some hasty footsteps under the nest.
Milda covered the chicks and the egg. the egg looks as perfectly whole as it was on the day when it was laid. the crack is under or behind the egg. i can't hear any egg talk either. i can't separate it from the chicks who are outside.

15:02 (nearly) Milda got up and began to feed the babies.
Image

the smaller chick was sitting partly in front of the egg. sometimes i could see a dark line there but was it a straw or a longish hole? :puzzled:
the second egg shell is crushed.
Image

15:06 Milda covered the chicks.

15:37 Raimis brings a fishi. He has a big crop
He jumps on on the left branch and is cleaning his beak.
15:36 he jumps on the higher branch and is cleaning his beak again. Shakes his plumage ..

15:37 Milda began to tweet...
Raimis brought a nice big brown fish. :headroll:
Image

Milda took the fish from Raimis and as thanks she pecked him in the face. :slap:
... hmm? actually it was more like a kiss really. Milda combed his neck feathers upwards...
Image

... and then she pulled the feathers on his cheeks. Raimis wasn't quite sure how to take this.
Image

Milda began to feed.

15:42 Raimis flew away. - is there a hole on the egg? or is this some dirt? it is on the other end where a pip hole should be. :puzzled:
Image

Milda was standing in front of the kids... then she moved a little to the side.
15:42 the smaller (?) hit the other with a bang in the head. :slap:
this picture is a split second before the hit. the chick is aiming...
Image

Milda continued feeding.
15:45 she finished and covered the babies.
