Wonderful story, but so sad, that it ended like that. But you had to do that, to protect children.

Thanks so much for telling us and for the pics too.

Yes, we really had so much fun with Pica Pica! Though sometimes he/she was driving me crazy!!! We had to hide all small things in the house and protect our food too. Not only once did he take a snadwich directly from your hand on the way to your mouth "POOF" and it was gone  Then much later you could find it between the books on the book shelf!!
He got into the dogs food bowls too when I fed them. It was so quick thet the dogs never caught it, even if they tried to protect their food. They just started eating quicker :gathering:

But yes, we do miss Pica Pica!!

We actually did trading with Pica Pica too!
Once it took one of my ear rings right off my ear while sitting on my shoulder. I wanted it back!!! It sat there in the birch and was so proud  . I took a match box (favorite toy) and shook it. Pica Pica couldn't resist that so it flew back, the ear ring still in its mouth, and traded the ear ring for the match box. Then back to the tree where it opened the box with its beak, holding it with one foot, and then started empty it match by match. With the matchboxes we could get several things back

Hello caysa!
As many others wrote: Great story with sad ending. From own experience I know that great feeling you have when you coddle up a young or injured animal. I had animals of serveral species (in addition to some others: Great Tit, House Sparrow, Mallard, Rook, Jay, hedgehog) - with different success. But many survived. You find a lot when you´re outside in the nature a lot.
I´m quite sure that I wouldn´t have the heart to put down an animal with which I lived together for some time. It becomes like a child (for me). But it´s right: Even if one of these animals dies, you´ll be grateful for the time you were able to live together. After some time this deep happyness slowly displaces the sadness about the animal´s death. The longer you lived together and the deeper your relationship to this animal was the loger this time lasts.
Thank you very much for this story, caysa. I wished everybody would care for our nature with its animals that much!

I do think that everyone on this forum is ready to take care of injured or helpless animals, pets or wildlife. Thanks to the wildlife cams and forums like this we can spread the joy of living with animals and more people will learn to love nature

My granddaughter just came here to be in our care today.
Her cat at home had kittens 12 weeks ago....
I did know that one kitten did not have a new home yet but I was not ready for this :rotf:

The little girl came with this last kitten - said his name is MUSTA (means black :D ) and told us that this kitten is for Mamma and Pappa (that's us).
Well, we did not plan to have another cat :slap: - but what can you say???????
