Synopsis
Collision of birds with the cables of powerlines and electrocution of birds sitting on power poles are important factors increasing mortality of some threatened species. The present report analyses the phenomenon and makes technical proposals to protect birds from electrocution.

31.World Wildlife Fund is offering 5000 Euro for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for poisoning four White-tailed Eagles in Northern Germany
January 27th 2011
At least four White-tailed Eagles have been poisoned last year in a region in Northern Germany. Three birds have been found at the edge of a copse west of Gothendorf, one between the villages Güster and Fitzen, NABU* reported on January 27th 2011. It turned out that the eagles were poisoned with Mevinphos. This insecticide is banned in the EU since 2007, in Germany since 1990.
*NABU = Founded in 1899, NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union), is one of the oldest and largest environment associations in Germany

“One of the most serious threat for the conservation of species of carnivores like bear, wolf and scavenger raptors (...) is represented by the illegal use of poison. The aim of the LIFE+ ANTIDOTO project, realized in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park (Italy), in the Andalusia Region (Spain) and the Aragon Region (Spain), is to adopt and disseminate innovative measures for the fight against the illegal use of poison.”
