Yes, Siiri is her name and Elis is big brother. Elis is an old male name here in Finland.
Elis in Swedish and Eelis in Finnish. Elis' father's father was Elis too :nod:

I waited for 10 years...... gave them hints every now and then....
Then suddenly - they are both pregnant :rotf: and the children were born with only 3 weeks apart. Oh dear was I a busy granny !! And now 2½ years later a third one :rolleyes:

This - picture below, bun with whipped cream & almond paste - is what is eaten in Sweden on vastlapäev, Shrove Tuesday, fettisdagen, with serious reviews of top-ten ones in newspapers. (To tell the truth, they have been around since Christmas)
What is the best place for vastlakuklid in Tallinn? Any tests?

Oh, goodie! A Shrove Tuesday pancake fest!
Well, that is what we do in UK - make pancakes. Usually they are flavoured by sprinkling lemon jiuce and sugar, which is my favourite. Others use honey, or maple syrup.

What other traditions are there? Cream buns in Estonia - there must be other traditions in other countries. Please share your Shrove foods with us, either recipes or pics, or both!

What is the history behind this Shrove event? Does it date from early Christian times, or before then?

The Shrove Tuesday ended the winter and Christmas period parties.
it was the last possibility to eat a good meal before fasting -which ended with Easter.
i know that Russians have the tradition of eating pancakes (plinõ) during a week(maslenitsa),
just like you in UK!
Estonians eat also salted beans, pig legs and a green pea soup is absolute must!

... and the Sunday before was Pork (or anyway Meat) Sunday, in the really old days, so the foxes over in Eagle Camera rightly and properly followed old traditions when they took the meat and had that feast last night . :D

PS. Kuremari - pancakes, a whole week? Wow!

Blini are small, yeast-leavened, buckwheat pancakes. Classically they are served with sour cream, cottage cheese & caviar or smoked salmon.
Blins had a somewhat ritual significance for early Slavic peoples in pre-Christian times since they were a symbol of the sun, due to their round form. They were traditionally prepared at the end of the winter to honor the rebirth of the new sun (Pancake week, or Maslenitsa).

Some more names for Shrove Tuesday from Robin's source: Porridge Day (well, pancakes or vastlakuklid are nicer), Seven Pig Trotter Day, Pig Marrow Eating Day ... and all will be well if you eat at least 7 or 9 helpings of porridge. With butter...
