Re: A Place for Empty Nesters.

Post by AMY2008 »

Hi Amy2008

It'd good that you noticed the different placement of the band, but it doesn't follow that it means that was not Madis. The most obvious explanation is that perhaps the photo got reversed so it looks like the tag is on the other leg. From some of the other photos on the Migration Map page, it looks like Urmas and some of his colleagues usually use non-digital cameras, so it is easy to mistakenly reverse the negative while printing.

I believe that is Madis, flying around the nest while Urmas was at the nest ringing the chicks. Piret was also flying around watching them the whole time. Urmas also reported that Madis was carrying a fish during that time. Why would another adult osprey be flying so close to that nest with a fish, especially when there were humans there? Surely Piret would have chased a strange osprey away. Since they were the only two adult ospreys anywhere hear the nest site and watching what was happening in the nest, I tend to believe that Urmas is correct in identifying the bird as Madis since Urmas was there and observed them all the whole time.
Good Evening everyone,
I have received Urmas's formal reply for my doubt about Madis's photo on the Bird Migration Map. He said that the photo made horisontal flip because of the shooting angle, hence the ring was actually on the Osprey's right leg and he is still Madis. Urams also attached the original photo to me for clarify.
Thanks Wisteria, Homedi, maroni, reply as well.

I have a few "back to Earth" questions:
(Could somebody PLEASE  forward them to the CLUB?)

How much is a new camera and a new transmiter?
What about maintenance costs and some user fees?
What are the the priorities of the CLUB? What is the most important improvement they dream of?

We will have to sit in this empty nest until next spring ... we have enough time to think about some fundraising or any other way to :help:

Thank you AMY, I think this original photo is much better that the corrected one. I can feel it...... and Madis is looking directly at me

I personally don’t believe in this theory, but, of course, everybody can believe what he wants.
I think it is a question of religion or faith, so we do not want to deepen it
Sure, this is not a place to talk about faith. I just mean that NATURE and HUMANITY are inseparable - BOTH were created somehow and need to coexsist in peace. To say that humans are not necessary for Earth to survive is the same as to say that a LIFE is not necessary on Earth as well.
Universe can exist without HUMANS and without NATURE....... but the LIFE happend and we have to respect it in all creatures.
The ospreys were created at some point (Cara) to control the fish population. The humans were created at some point to ..... we just don't know yet .... or .... maybe we forgot

Eden wrote: Hi Cara, I fully agree with most what you say – but I don’t believe that animals and plants are on earth to delight us with their beauty. In my eyes this would be an enormous over-estimation of mankind. But maybe it is a present which was given to men during evolution to recognize beauty and wonderful smells. My dogs surely neither see that a butterfly or a rose is beautiful, nor are they interested in the smells of flowers. (But they are interested in the smell of a dogbiscuit and just nearly started a fight therefore… blöde Viecher….)
Dear Eden  You misunderstood my words ;-) .... maybe because I didn't want to repeat my whole "roman" I posted before. In this "roman" I wrote about the "purpose of every life in nature" and I typed no word about "beauty" ;-) And so I repeated this line only, that there is a purpose for ALL, BUT that I think that people shouldn't bring every life into the question for the purpose. Instead of this they should SEE the beauty and simply ACCEPT this as beauty! ..... without bringing it into the question of purpose (EVEN if there IS a purpose!) ..... hmmmmm..... I try to explain with an example: if I see a bumblebee in a blossom, I KNOW about the PURPOSE of this bumblebee and this blossom! But I do NOT watch it with the knowing about the PURPOSE - I ONLY watch it and think that the blossom and the bumblebee are beautiful and I'm HAPPY to SEE this beauty!
....... And relating to "evolution": I think more the opposite is the case: that exactly this change of humankind into "modern high-teched civilization people" brought humans going away more and more from the recognizing of beauty ( =NATURE! ) ..... And in ages of our ancestors there were much more beauty and wonderful smells in nature than in "our modern world" ..... And to see "the beauty of nature" was with reference to humans only (and it has nothing to do with over-estimation) ..... of course every earthling has a complete "other way of looking" at other earthlings ;-) but this is also given by nature. When humans (at least most of humans) see a little rabbit at a meadow they think "how cute" ..... when a hawk sees the same little rabbit, the hawk thinks "how tasty" :whistling:

Cara, this is the essence of this discussion :2thumbsup: beautiful words

I need to add something: when I see a rabbit in my backyard (it is cute, raised on my weeds from the beginning) I ask my family: roast or pate? :rotf:
Just kidding ...... but .... I am not a vegetarian

If we disturb the balance, then we disturb the way the earth responds and we have not been doing a very good job of this (not you, me or anyone here on this wonderful message board) but people who are not educated to know about the balance, or people who don't care and think everything will be ok, no matter how bad they treat animals and the earth. We must keep up the good fight to educate everyone, with kindness if any way possible, so that everyone will realize how important this is. Chimega  you understand so very well what I meant and I have nothing to add to your lines! They are only to comment with a mega-super-sized *2 thumbs up* :2thumbsup: ..... :D

Hi Amy
Thanks for checking with Urmas and letting us know what he said. It's nice to find people who are willing to see a different point of view (literally in this case!)

I was just guessing at the cause of the mix-up, so it's gratifying to see it confirmed.

Hi Cara  the reason for misunderstanding may be that I have sometimes difficulties to understand such explanations in English. But I think I got it now.
BUMBLEBEE…. :shake: this sounds phonetic really cute and fits to this lovely little animal. Our German word HUMMEL is very meaningless against this.
One planet meets another. Planet 1 says to Planet 2, “Hey you look terrible”. Planet 2 says, “Yes I know. I have Homo Sapiens.” Planet 1 says, “Don’t worry. I had that too and it will soon disappear.

HUMMEL has a lot of meaning, like the HUMMMing sound it makes while flying. Similar to hummingbird (kolibri) in English.
Try Polish TRZMIEL - this one has lots of meaning when you try to pronounce it :headroll:

Hej ;) !
I was sad after Uno left us.., prepared myself for more goodbyes.
At the same time, the last 7 weeks Ihave been sick , bitten of a little creap called fästing .You can get Borrelia and even much more risky illnesses from that creap.
As dr dont want to give penicillin I got really sick and have no energy. I walked like a drunk and only 100 m.At last I got medicin and now I am well..during that period our little darlings started migrate one by one.
First the sweet Uno, and than I tried to think about how to take care of the little birds here in winter..I kleened the automat they get food from and so on..then Elo left..nature called , we can think yes or no, they will go anyway..
I was better prepared for sec migrator..but than..To listen to Noris sad calls and to see her sitting with the fish and listen hard after her sister..so alone in nest, noone to talk to, it was fine it went quick, before Nori and Father moved on.

What a wonder if we can see them once again in a couple of years, and how nice it would be if we can see Madis and Piret again.
Now I try to learn a little more of every bird on migratingmap. Its very interesting.

Looked at temp in Africa where Piret is and at night it was 14-16+ , beware of crocodiles and hope you find a safe place to rest dear Piret. Madis is coming soon (I hope)

Goodnight :dunno:

It is sort of funny, but I was least sad at Nori's leaving. I loved her best, but I was ready. And the last few days watching her, when she had a fish -- and she sort of seemed hungry, but she was more interested in the world around her -- it was almost like I could feel her being called off on her journey. She had to go.

gjuselover, glad to hear you are feeling better

Felt exactly the same as you did Alice.....I was partial to Nori...and I guess that's not the way to be....I should have felt equal love for all... I did notice the wistful look Nori had when the others were gone and it was just Nori and Madis....I think Nori missed fighting with Uno and Elo for the next fish...missed calling out to Madis in unison when the next food delivery came....the look on Nori's face and in her eyes changed dramatically the last days...I know that the scientists and biologists would pooh-pooh that notion but the long moments she spent on the nest those last afternoons tells me differently....instinctual,yes...but, there was also something else going on.....

The last fish that Madis brought Nori was really small, so maybe what we saw was Nori thinking "Pffft, such a small fish, I can do better than that on my own. See ya!)

I don't agree to some points of view, which I read the past minutes since I'm online here again ..... I am able to refute some assertions - not with "my strong faith" only, but rather with scientific knowledge! But due to the fact that this scientific knowledge is the "base" of my faith I decided to add nothing more, because I agree to Eden with her posting to Celeste: (quote) "I think it is a question of religion or faith, so we do not want to deepen it" ..... My arguments against some points of views would have been based on science! But my faith IS based on this science (about nature!) and also on ethics which in turn is based on my faith AND science..... and all that together is too complex for a posting and would be better for a talk which would have words spoken "mouth to ears" than per keyboard..... Some "deeper" talks we can do here - some others not ..... I will do it again and again - but only until a special point where there it's better to make "a stop"! I NEVER "make a stop" at my working places - no matter if per typing on a keyboard or per "mouth" (I mean my working places for animal- and nature protection). In some way this forum is "kind of one of my working places" - but - mainly it is not! .....
But @ gjuselover: No reason for saying a "sorry"! ..... Your question gave some "stuff" to discuss with sharing some points of view - and that is NOT BAD, definitely NOT! ..... And due to the fact that I know (and EVERYBODY here knows) that you did NOT post it in a "bad meant way" everything is FINE! *Lots of greetings* go to SWEDEN Image ..... And some *nicest WAVES* also to Eden and Celeste :-) and another "nice wave* to Chimega  ..... Thank you for "being a part" of the "discussion" by sharing points of views!
