dear owl-fans, as I wasn't able to check the posts lately :bash: , I am completely lost on the situation :help:, besides being happy to see the two feather-balls :chick: :chick: :) Would there be anyone good enough to give me a very brief recap of the recent progress in the nest? I.e. how many eggs there were, how many owlets were born :bounce: and when, and - as I sadly assume - how many didn't make it :( Are these two the biggest/oldest ones? Thanks a lot and I am going to keep track from now on! :)

5 eggs, 5 hatched, 2 survived owlets.
in the first round were hatched 3, after few days other 2.
i think that survived owlets are those who were born first.

I am finding this fascinating as I didn't know owls hunted during the day. Does anyone know 1) if this is specific to Tawny owls or if other species do it and 2) if it is only during breeding season?
Thannks for any help/info

Jumal küll!
It will be hard due to my bad english but I will try. During breeding season need of food is increasing therefore owls must to hunt during the day. It's not specifific for Tawny owl. Other species, for example, Little Owl, Ural Owl also do it. But there is strictly nocturnal species, for example, Long-eared owl, Tengmalm's owl. They very rarely hunt during the day. On the other hand there are species what hunt during the dusk and day all the time, for examle, Snowy Owl, Short eared owl, Norther hawk owl. This is very shortly about this phenomen.

I'm not sure if they hunt during the day, because they do not bring prey to the nest. Maybe just staying out of the nest?

Maybe, but it's possible that Tawny owl hunts during the day in breeding season, at least it do when there is more light outside when compare to other periods of their life cycle.

vainamoinen Please don't apologise for your English it is very good and thank you for your reply it is exactly what I wanted to know, these are indeed fascinating creatures.

Mamicja it is possible also that they feed themselves during the day or maybe rest away from a crowded nest, I have seen some pictures where they have brought prey at around 9-10am which is what prompted my question. They are amazign animals and the pictures and videos posted on here are so very interesting!

Thank you to everyone for making it such a great forum :gathering: :shake: and especially the picture, video and gif posters on here.
