Good morning,
my name is Sophie, I am french. I like your coments and pichures.
I have a question: why the male gives fish wihtout head to te femeles?
Think you
Friendly

Jürgen
Not completely sure but this is my opinion...
Since the head is the most "delicious" part of the fish (for ospreys at least ) and the male needs to regain some energy from fishing then he eats the head of the fish right away.
Also maybe it has something to do with the weight of the fish as well.
Those are my opinions... I am not completely sure but should I be wrong then somebody correct me, please.
This is what I have been wondering, too, Jürgen, your opinion sounds logical. :dunno:
------------
Just a curiosity opinion/remark off topic : it is generally thought that cats eat all but not the head of the fish (those common pictures of fish bones cat eaten but not the head) - my two 17 yrs old cats only eat the heads and leave rest uneaten ...

I'm no expert, but I believe that the head is eaten male ospreys, to kill fish. Dead fish not jumping on the nest and may not hit, for example, young Chicks. :shake: In any case, this is one of the reasons.

Welcome Sophie.

I live near ospreys in the USA. A male comes everyday, at least once, to my yard. He usually eats the head and then takes the body of the fish away. I don't know why they do this. Maybe the head has the most nourishment for his hunting efforts?

I think they always, always eat the head first. No exceptions, whatsoever. Just my 2 cents.

Irma came and seems to want Ilmar off the nest --- poked him with a branch and he left. Irma chirps now.
