I have visited Estonia the whole past week time and cannot look at the forum.

Thank you about knowledge and Urmas to taking care of owlets first times out of the nest.

Aivar's photograph of the Tawny Owl nest in January

Image

From Aivar -

1. Aivar said that they close the cam for now and maybe it will start again in the autumn. and if it does they want to have better technology.
2. The nest will not be cleaned. By the time a new layer of wooden material will drop down, but maybe the researchers gather some samples of food remains from there.
3. About the 4 angular thing- there are crannies as the tree is aslant. They have to build and fit nearby a new nestbox, in case the tree should break .
4.About the owlets return- a small possibility , but only for a very short time as the trees are in leaves and there is plenty of shelter.
Some other birds may come there, a goosander maybe, but it will not stay for summer either.
and Aivar thanks everybody for support

the pictures are of the nest on Jan.9th and May the 11th

Very interesting to see the cavity in colour.
And I too, had wondered if those splits were natural or not.
Thanks for the information.

I think I saw this moment when she moved the mouse creature and exposed a chick -- then I got side tracked by feeding the hawk chicks.

as far as I understood the dutch commentary, they expect all chicks to hatch today

edit: by the way, thanks to the estonian authors for giving the information in so many languages...

Yes, the height surprised me, too. From what we could hear and see from the webcam, I thought it was nearer to the ground!

Urmas said the young in his photograph are this years chicks.
