Black Stork Webcam Discussion ~ ? ~ 2015
This year it is not clear if we will have this Black Stork nest and if yes, who is coming to make a nest, and if somebody is coming at all.
It is situated in Läänemaa, western Estonia. Local farmers know the nest site already from the Soviet kolkhoz period. The nest is quite far from roads, about 2 kilometres as the crow flies.
In 2009 three chicks grew up there. There was no camera there in this year.
The 2010 nesting failed; in July there were only egg shells under the nest. Also no camera at the nest.
In 2011 the camera was put there for the first time and four young grew up in the nest; we could watch, with somewhat varying success, how they grew up and left the nest.
In 2012 there were four eggs, three hatched. One storklet injured its beak and had to be taken out of the nest to the veterinary hospital. Unfortunately all attempts to help the storklet failed.
At the end of the season a young White-tailed Eagle gave us a fright when he visited the nest while the two young storks still spent time on the nest.
Last year we watched how mother "Tiina" arrived already on March 29 on the nest and waited for a long time for partner "Tiit" to arrive. She even started with laying (unfertilized) eggs. On the day the second egg appeared, a strange male stork appeared and we all rejoiced, hoping for a still successful nesting season in Läänemaa with a new male partner for Tiina. However, the male stork was either too young and inexperienced, or had some other issues, he kept on destroying the eggs laid by Tiina. On April 22 both left the nest and did not return to it.
April 6: our beloved camera has just gone online, the picture is still hazy, but it looks like moss on the nest, so hopefully somebody was working on the nest already. Something white is there, but I think it is no egg.
I have kept an "?" as I have no idea who will come to the nest in this year, it can be added if and when some storks come to the nest and we see who it is.

Facts about the previous seasons
When the camera started for the first time in 2011 (April 21), Tiina and Tiit already had one egg. This season 4 eggs were laid and four chicks hatched, which the forum people called "Üks" (One), "Kaks" (Two), "Kolm" (Three) or Johanna and "Neli" (Four). All four fledged successfully, after receiving their rings (711C, 711F, 711J and 711T) on June 28, 2011.
In 2012 the first stork was seen on the nest on March 28, both together were seen first time on April 10.
Eggs were laid on April 14, 16, 18, 20. Three chicks hatched on May 20. The fourth egg did not hatch. The three storklets were called Tommy, Kelly and Lenny by the forum people. On June 29 they got their rings (708R, 708T, 708U). Unfortunately "Lenny" was injured and had to be taken out of the nest and taken into veterinary care, where sadly he could not be helped. Read more here: http://www.looduskalender.ee/en/node/13843
In 2013 Tiit arrived on the nest on April 16 and Tiina arrived on April 18. The nest was still deeply covered with snow in the beginning.
5 eggs were laid on April 21, 23, 25, 27 and 29. Two chicks hatched on Sunday, May 26, the other three eggs were apparently not fertilized and did not hatch. The two storklets received the names Liina and Miiko and on June 30 received their rings from Urmas: 712 L and 712 M
2014 Tiina arrived on March 29. On April 12, around 9 AM, still waiting for Tiit to arrive, Tiina laid an presumably unvertilized egg. During the night of April 17 or early in the morning, Tiina laid another egg, but did not incubate any of them. During the morning and before noon, she was acting very agitated and shortly before 1 PM a second stork arrived. We decided after a lengthy discussion and comparison, that the new stork is a new male and not Tiit. He disposed of both eggs. On April 18, at 15:54, another egg appeared, which was almost immediately destroyed by the male. On April 21, at 6:48, Tiina laid a fourth egg, which was most likelyy fertilized by this male. Nevertheless, 10 minutes after it was laid, also this last egg was destroyed by the male. On April 22 both storks were last seen on the nest.

It's foggy here but one can see a fresh portion of moss so at least one bird has arrived.

Hope the lense will clear, but with changing light, the white is already gone. Maybe some bark from the tree ahead.

Hello together,
thank you for opening this topic, Felis silvestris! I’m so happy that the eaglemen again installed a camera at this beautiful nest. Thank you so much!
I’m often thinking of Tiina and last years events und would be so happy to see her again. But she probably has changed to another place to breed.
Let us hope for a lucky season, who ever will come.

Stream is still not stable. Comes and breaks off again. The lense is still damp and fogged.

Cam is working at the moment but the picture is rather bad, just a set of spots. And nobody in the nest.
Welcome camera view! I hope there will be better luck for us watchers this season than last year
BTW Did Kotkamen find out something about Tiina and the new male last year - did they have a nest and chicks?

I have got the information that the instable situation with this camera is due to a problem with the antenna at the mobile tower. Renno is trying to fix the problem, but it is not sure when it will actually work out.
No other news, only that it seems that there is presently no activity in the nest.

Hello!Owlie wrote:BTW Did Kotkamen find out something about Tiina and the new male last year - did they have a nest and chicks?
Last year Tiina and new male most probably didn´t had new breeding attempt in new nest. Maybe they strarted to build new nest but usually they do not try to breed second time during same spring because there is not enough time to rise the chicks before autumn migration. Usually if one bird arrives late (after 20-25th of April) then they do not breed or breeding might fail. But year 2014 action was very suprising to us also because new male broke also his "own" eggs. All similar cases (3-4 times) we have seen in other nests using trailcams have shown breaking down the "other stork" eggs.
Sorry for webcam´s foggy picture! Cam was in the tree during the winter and moisture is under the lens. It will dry out finally but takes at least few days more - after two days only about 30% is dried out. Hopefully today´s windy weather help also. Yesterday we changed the adapter of the antenna in mobile tower which might be problematic. Hopefully webcam works now fluently. If not then there are problems with antenna itself.
Despite of the foggy picture there seems to be new moss in the nest, over the leaves from the last year? It means at least one stork have been here for a while. After breeding failure they might build new nest and decorate also their old nest. After missing the Tiit it also might cause female to leave the territory and go to another males territory. Or Tiina and new male build new nest somewhere. If they did hopefully it is closer than 5 km because otherwise it is very difficult to find out where they are. So here are many possibilities what is going on here in this nest. Next two weeks will show us.
Until now about 50-60% of the Black Storks should be arrived in Estonia. In warm springs average arrival date is between 6th and 8th of April. There is still possibility Tiina and new male haven´t arrived yet but one of them must be here latest 15th of April. In Estonia BS start to lay eggs since 9th of April and awerage is 21st. This year Latvian BS webcam pair started to breed very early but spring is also very early here.
Next weeks I will check Tiit and Tiina´s territory (in the top of spruce tree) to find out what they are doing here. If they are breeding somewhere close then sooner or later probably male will visit also webcam nest. But hopefully they will arrive during next days and breed in our webcam nest.
RENNO,
thank you very much for sharing with us what you know!
We, of course hope the same as you: to see a stork couple in this nest this year. We cross our fingers!

Thanks a lot, Renno! Your informations about the Black Storks nesting behaviour and arrivals are exceedingly interesting.
I think we all here would be very happy, if we can get some information about what Tiina is doing now. So a lot of luck with checking the territory! And please be careful in the top of the spruce tree.
Fingers are crossed that Tiina and her male arrive in time and breed in “our” webcam nest.
