Dear hardworking careful owl. We congratulate you on your new addition the family!
it's like she is covering all holes with her bodyparts as much as it is possible, leaving a space for the owlets beneath her. look how she is letting her wings down to the floor too (like head)Bellatrix wrote:... And it is interesting how she rests with her head down. Does she have her forehead on the floor? Watching the chicks constantly?

Thank you very much! Impressive sight, I did not believe that chick swallow a rat whole. It's amazing!Bosuil wrote:At 0:25 AM Israeli time, breakfast was served: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qnx1l6RwCGs....
I'm not sure whether it was a mouse or a rat, but Barn Owls for sure eat rats. In any case, them swallowing it as a whole prey makes it harder for the smaller chicks to get their part.Reptile wrote:(...) I did not believe that chick swallow a rat whole. It's amazing!

I can't understand how they manage to swallow a complete mouse - well, admitted, afterwards - they just fall over from weight!

I also heartily recommend those videos!Bosuil wrote:If you haven't seen these, check out the earlier clips on the right hand side of the webcam image of 16-03 "Paarband verstevigen" (improving the bond between them) and 26-03 "Knuffelen en een goed gesprek" (preening each other) to hear the communication between the parents!
I have seen them and especially "knuffelen" is my favouriteMuscovy Duck wrote:
Mr Noctua sometimes shows a healthy interest in the mice during his visits, but the mother of the family prevents him from following through... :)
