Our three ospreys continue their ways ....

Overview



Kalle - when he continues his way straight, he will cross a small part of South Sudan, Central African Republic and then maybe stay in Democratic Republic of the Congo .... near river Congo?



National Parks and Nature Reserves are along his way

Markus - he is still in Chad, but meanwhile not far from the border to Central African Republik




He also has several National Parks and Nature Reserves on his way - they are smart guys, our ospreys

I guess that Markus is going to head for Lefini Reserve at the River Congo - that's where he stayed
last winter.

Does anyone know how ospreys travel? How often do they need food and water? Do they eat and drink to store in fat so that they can metabolise this energy on long flights where there is no suitable place to get fish?

Is it written somewhere how the loading of screen shots of the migration map works?

Fingers crossed for all our migrating birdies.

Text news on the migration map

All followed migrants are gone from Estonia

As we can see on migration map, only one male Lesser Spotted Eagle (Volli) is still in Estonia. But that individual does not fly to Africa, because was shot by poacher in 23th of August near Tartu. He has also chick to feed that time. The mate of Volli - female Karin (her we followed for years already) probably managed to bring up the juvenile eagle alone. We observed juvenile flying near nest site together with female Karin, but don't know if juvenile gained shape good enough for long migration. Environmental inspectors investigate that case.
Other migratory birds either migrate or are already in wintering grounds, like Black Stork Raivo (reached Israel in 26th of August) and Osprey Markus (arrived in 26th of September to Lefini river, Congo, over the Equator).
There are new individuals among Cranes, all juveniles (Ahja5, Ivar, Mati). More information about every individual is available in their introduction. For Ahja5 there was awaited its flight toward Ethiopia, but first it flew into Hiungary, like did also Ivar. Crane named as Mati comes from Saaremaa island, therefore its western migration route is not a surprise.
Black Vulture Mikho from Georgia started also the migration. Black Storks Eedi and Karl stopped for longer in stop over sites, but now they are flying ahead towards wintering sites.
Different following devices forward data with different frequency, therefore the results may fluctuate in time. At the moment the leader of migration marathon of Lesser Spotted Eagles is Vahur, but with new data it may change.

Since a few days no new datas from Osprey Kalle, but I hope he is okay and only out of good GPS coverage area - it was also so last season, when we got his datas only every now and then.

This is so sad, so hopeless. Unbearable. Are there predator birds which live up to a high age without
being killed by humans, directly or indirectly?

Anyway, Kalle has arrived in Kongo near river Kongo now - he is on the other side from where Markus is, at a
confluence (name not shown in map). So his absence of data was due to weak signals. *I am relieved*

Migration map news about our ospreys wintering areas:
...The Ospreys we follow second year, they are exactly in the same places as last winter. In the winter grounds of Kalle the GSM network has been not improved, his data we receive as irregularly as last season. Osprey Vadim we follow first year, therefore everything is new about his travel. Vadim stops (or winters) at the Turkana lake, Kenya. He is flying daily twice between Central Island in lake and mainland, that is about 25 km each time. Central Island is of vulcanic origin and in some places steam and smoke are going also now. Probably there are no suitable trees on island for safe overnight, but fishing conditions are better as along a shore. Lake of Turkana is still hudge, about 250km long, uncommon desert lake with its saline and alcaline water and wildlife in there...

Oh nice, GSE Iti (Tõnns mother) reached the wintering place at Göksu river delta
She didn't get updated for a week up in the Turkish highlands so me got a bit worried

To be honest, I am also relieved to see Iti savely arrived in Göksü delta.

Is any more known about Iti, i.e. her age? Apart from her 'profile' next to her name in the birdmap there is little information about her. She must be about 15 years of age.
