Re: Black Stork Nest in Karula - 2017
Biker, thank you for your response! I am going to assume that Karl was fed by a parent bird during his imaginary fall from the nest, when much younger. Of course, the editor may still dispute it, but I can ony claim artistic license!

That's a good idea.
nevertheless: feedings outsides of the nests can't at least not completely be excluded, see the link i mentioned

I didn't know the young Karl and had no idea about his accident. :)
So far it was new to me (probably not for most other Black Stork fans here): They build their nests in different tree species in different ways.
Nests on spruces differ from structure and build as well as the material from sites on beeches or oaks.
eg here
Page 19: http://rettet-den-odenwald.de/wp-conten ... 16V1-5.pdf
it is descripted that the view of nests from the ground can be very variable and some are not padded with moss.

Thank you, Biker, you are posting very interesting links!
No moss? Different structures? I will have to look for my good old German dictionary and just read it...
Good luck with the editor, Jo UK!
Claiming artistic license is always worth a try!

Biker, it's wonderful what you write. I live on the edge of the Franconian Forest. Liz will remember that I wrote in the summer, I saw black storks flying past my house. According to your post, they nest about 30 km from me.

Ozlos does not have a transmitter. So we must wait until spring and hope that he will be back then

Oct. 23rd:
What about Karl's nest - no further proposals????????
(p.s. tea is unhealthful for mice )
Jo UK wrote:Urmas sent e-mail about the possibilites for Karl and Kati's nest, next year. He mentions three suggestions.
1. " We can leave it like it is. IN this case the storks will probably return to the nest. Then we can see how they behave with a partial nest left on the tree. If they decide not to stay in that place we can, hopefully, find their new nest, according to data from Karl's transmitter. Of course, it needs to be working correctly by then. It is most likely that it will be working well.
2. It is likely that the storks will try to repair the nest at first, before they decide to build a new one.. We do
not know, if it is safe for brood, but it would be a fully natural process, which might happen without our interference.
3. We can build an artificial nest in nearly the same place and watching
nest life would be easier next years, but we can miss natural behaviour of storks in this situation."
Urmas sent some photographs of the damaged nest, taken by Siim Vahtrus from the ground during removal of camera. Ain on tree
Pics coming next.
(I ruined my mouse, with tea, this morning, and the new one is not well-trained yet.)
