“The 2016 report of the RAPTOR (Recording and Addressing Persecution and Threats to Our Raptors) protocol is now available. The RAPTOR protocol is a cooperarative approach between the NPWS, regional veterinary laboratories, and state laboratories, to systematically determine the extent to which poisoning and persecution are threats to Ireland's native birds of prey.”

187.White-tailed Eagle found dead after being shot. Poland, January 2018

The emaciated (2,7kg) adult male was found dead on January 5th in a forest near Gatniki. A sick eagle was discovered in the same area last February and died later in a wildlife rescue centre, but the case was not investigated. This time the dead bird was x-rayed. According to the article, the raptor quite likely starved to death after it had been shot a while ago.

189.Fox and White-tailed Eagle died from carbofuran. Czech Republic, January 2018

The animals were found dead near the village of Matná earlier this month; police is investigating the case. According to the article, the numbers of wildlife poisonings are increasing in the CR.

Partially eaten foxes were found along with the raptors, according to the report by State Forests/Lasy Państwowe.

Update, 19 February: New suspected poisoning cases under investigation

Update on the two White-tailed Eagles, found in mid-February: It turned out that the female bird had been not only poisoned – somebody had tried to shoot and kill her. Vets are still hoping to nurse this injured eagle back to health. The male bird was released into the wild. All current cases of wildlife crime in this area are investigated by the police.

191.Carbofuran: Three poisoning cases confirmed, another eagle found dead. Poland, March 2018

The death of a fourth WtE in the Narol Forest District was reported today. Forests/Lasy Państwowe confirmed that the three raptors which have been found previously in the same area (see doc. #190) have died from carbofuran poisoning.

193.Carbofuran poisoning case in Denmark. March 2018

The Danish Ornithological Society (DOF) confirmed another poisoning case today. According to DOF, the male White-tailed Eagle died quite likely in December. The dead body, found near Juelsminde in east Jutland in January 2018, was sent to the National Veterinary Institute DTU for a necropsy. Southeast Jutland Police is investigating.

195.Birds of prey found dead in southwestern Slovakia. March 2018

Within two weeks four white-tailed eagles, an eastern imperial eagle and at least one common buzzard and western marsh harrier were found dead. The Group "Raptor Protection of Slovakia" reports that the country had 21 WtE breeding pairs in 2017. One of the dead eagles was ringed in a nest nearby in 2016.

196.Suspected carbofuran poisoning. Czech Republic, March 2018

The eagle, ringed eight years ago in southern Bohemia, was found near the village of Trebohostice (Strakonice).
