Latvian black storks - 2018

Four Storklets are very rare- I saw pictures with five, but on of them was later selected.

I found it again..
it is a good description, or an attempt to explain why the chicks are killed. And the difference why some birds let starve their chicks and the storks throw the chicks out of the nest.
They throw them because they have no control over food allocation. All eat when the food is in the nest...

It is not always connected with the amount of food. White storks in Makov, Honzik and Marushka, have more than enough food, but the very first year when they had storklets, Marushka threw two younger chicks out of the nest just because of her instinct. Since then the fourth and the fifth storklets from the next years are taken away by people in day time and returned at nights until they reach two weeks. Some storks don't have such an instinct, some do.

I did not write that either. It's about why they do not let starve the chicks or actively kill them. It's an explanation why they throw the chicks out of the nest.

yes, also if the chick, chiks are (more) smaller - weeker, not enough "agressive" for food and their surviving is questionable (it is better for chicks and also for adults when they are only 2-3 storklets in nest)

Four eggs! This was to expect.

Like many others I don‘t want to see a drama here. But I am glad that things seem to develop normally at this nest. It looks so beautiful with four eggs in it!
Let‘s hope the best for the future and let us enjoy the time.

Good Morning, Solo all

Michi you are welcome Do you think there will be a fifth egg? I don't think so.

6:09 Kaupo is incubating. Gaja comes home with a twig


She is preening him on the left side over the eye. I think she has plucked all black feathers there. Now he has a white spot

Ozol had not ring also we can only hope, that the male on "her" nest is he, Ozols - maybe we have later infos about storklets on that nest by Dr. Strazds
