Summi wrote: August 21st, 2018, 9:31 am Bea, please do not waste your time trying to find what I explained in my post. I hesitated long to write about it or not, since I don't remember exactly who it was but it would still explain how it might have happened. Anyway if the video were made, it would not solve the situation with Jaak's ring. Thank you very much for your work as moderator.
I will look for that situation. If it was the critical moment with Jaak's ring accident it must have been the 18th of August between 6:18 (last sighting with ring in the correct position) and 19:05 (first sighting with ring skidded down).

balistar wrote: August 20th, 2018, 11:36 pmIn this sad situation with Jaak's trapped toes now I must ask, if the above post from Summi was not read or noticed ??

It seems to me a comprehensible explanation for the emergence of this dilemma.
Would it be possible to create a retrospective video here as well or to find this situation in the archive at all ? Sure, it will not solve the problem, but it could provide insight for the experts who put the rings on or decide which rings to use.
The episode when Jaak got his talon entangled in a branch on the nest was one or two weeks ago. But he freed himself in an instant and the ring stayed in place. There is a notice in the thread by me and I think member Sunshine or someone else posted pictures of this event, maybe member mogga made a video. I don't know the exact time and day, so someone has to search in the posts of the last two or three weeks.

There are 12 to 16 hours of video a day. Two watch all these videos is impossible. Nobody in this forum is a paid ornithologist.

:hi: mogga, if this is only about this one day, I can also take a quick look at the four videos on pontu, my internet connection is fast

Edited: oh, I see that Bea already did that, thanks a lot! :2thumbsup:

I did not say that it was Jaak who got entangled maybe it was one of the other two but I only wanted to point out that it is one possibility how it may happen.

Good morning Summi and all ospreyholics :hi:

No, sure, nothing we can do helps Jaak in his unhappy situation. But it was absolutely right to write about the event you remembered, sometimes things happen and one still does not know that it will have consequences.
Or imagine it was in deed on that special day and no one else saw it, hardly anyone here can watch the cams 24/7.

And I think we all want to go to the bottom of things with for us available sources .... and that´s the archives 8-)

I checked the videos from 18. August to see whether this event was on that day.

In the morning at 06:15 Ivo delivered a fish to the nest and Jaak got it .... and his ring was still on the proper place, he left with the fish.
Sunshine reported it https://www.looduskalender.ee/forum/vie ... 03#p611603

And then I checked recordings from the whole day whether the event Summi wrote about or anything else could give a hint what had happened to Jaak.
But he was not back on the nest the whole day long, until 19:05 - when he returned and his ring was already slid down.
Again report from Sunshine https://www.looduskalender.ee/forum/vie ... 89#p611689

So all we can say is that no stick or anything else on the nest was the cause for his misfortune.
What pity, isn´t it? Maybe bad things can be accepted better when one knows the reason for it, but so all is still kept in the dark.

:hi:

I remember that some years ago one of the three Latvian osprets lost his/her ring, not in front of the camera though. It was same kind of ring as Jaak's one (but red).

Yes, same situation came also to my mind immediately, but it also remained a mystery how it could happen ...
Bea wrote: August 18th, 2018, 9:52 pm °°°°°°°°°°°°

Jepp, I found it .... it was in 2013 (ESTLAT project), when one of the three Latvian ringed juveniles (ring nr. 398) suddenly returned to the nest without its plastic ring.

https://www.looduskalender.ee/forum/vie ... 50#p267750

This makes me confident that Jaak will manage to get rid of his skidded down ring by his own

Thanks, Bea.

A short technical question. Do you watch it in 30 sec. steps or in fast forward mode (with pot player or another software)?

Very easy, mogga - VLC and 'fast forward" 8-) If someone lands on the nest, one can again slow the motion.
