:hi: Karl's Family -topic

No updates - very understandable, but a little bit unfortunate on the best migration time.
Does not Urmas have any help during his holidays?

Thank you Anne for a wonderful Windy! :D

Good evening all!

Yeah, at least in Egypt, somewhere along the Nile, and Päike somewhere near Cairo...
and we haven't seen nothing about those flyingtrips over the Mediterranean Sea...
but really I don't know at all where they are at the moment. :whistling:

Karula

A closer view on the pond near Dubova.

The water level seems to be low.

Thanks Anne7 and Swenja.

Sure. Evidently, the pond is so close to the hydrographic divide that local rain only can fill this water reserve of the village Dubova. Most water stored in spring has been consumed during the summer. The remaining water world tries to survive in an artificial ditch on the bottom of the pond, where Karula feeds. The pond locates c. 5km in NS-direction from Yemtsi but is more than 1000 km closer to Black Sea by river, because the waterway via North, river Dnieper and its tributaries is much longer than via Southern Buh which runs towards the sea. Now, the Mediterranean type diet of the BS may feel different, both by species and taste.

The remaining rivers on estimated migration route down to Southern Sudan all belong to the Mediterranean Basin drainage, except river Jordan. There the BS may find some exotic food.

Yes, Maru was at the same place on September 1st. :D

Image

Currently, Päike is about 100 km away from Maru.
We will see if Päike will continue her/his journey towards Maru's current location, or not.

Image

It is remarkable that Päike seems to be much more 'economical' with her/his energy.
She/he flew only about half the kilometres of Maru to cover the same distance.
(Päike 1249 km, Maru 2572 km)
Päike only flies long distances to travel 'southwards'.
Once she has found a good feeding area, she does not make local, energy-consuming excursions.
On the other hand, Maru has surely much more 'flying experience' by now.
I have no idea what might be the best strategy.

The overview on September 13 of Karl and his storklets.

The blue lines on this map probably indicate where Karula has been wading in 'shallow water'.
So at those 'blue' lines, the water is (approximately) between 5 and 40 cm deep?

Image

I believe that this could be the current situation of the pond.

I agree with IN and OUT locations and directions. However, data on Karula's movements is represented only at corner points of the coloured lines, at 30 minutes sampling rate. Some of these may be snapshots in flight or during walk to check objects on muddy bottom of mostly dry pond. Or, is sampling closer during feeding? Dense pattern of corners would represent main feeding area. It locates in front of OUT. This really would mean that there is more water of depth 5 - 40 cm than elsewhere, whether it is a finger of underwater land or a ditch. It could be a ditch to collect water there, because the majority of corners are around and not inside the pattern area and one cannot see any signs of elevated bottom there, although the water level is low in the air photo. So, in the central part of the feeding area the water depth would be more than 40cm?
