:hi: Ame: When you met Janis, did you mention when the Nagli ponds will be drained so that Knips can be released? I deliberately post it here, you might miss it if I posted this in the other thread.

Slowly I am getting a bit nervous because winter is coming on. And Knips still has to learn a lot before food gets scarce.

I check the rehab thread of the Latvian Forum regularly - no news there.

When they came in the morning, they look very small when I saw their arrival, i wasn't sure it's them.

I think they lost much weight.

thank you for the reports and videos! it's great to see that 'our' eagles have come back and that they seem to have decided to rebuild this nest. :headroll:

thank you Rita for reminding me about this.
yes, we talked a little about Knips, too. the original plan was to keep him in a cage on top of a high tower and release him in November or so. now Janis told me that Ugis Bergmanis has changed his mind. he is now planning to take Knips to one of the drained fish ponds (i have no idea which pond) and simply drop him out of the car.
that way Knips will join other eagles at that pond. that may happen in near future if i understood correct. i think that this sounds like a much better plan than keeping him in a cage for over a month more.

another thing which i forgot yesterday was the shortage of food last May - June. i asked Janis if he has any idea why there was so little food then. he said that MĀRIS (the DDF member who lives near the nest area and is helping Janis, and who is a keen fisherman) thinks that the very hot weather warmed the surface waters too hot for fish. this forced fish to swim in deeper waters where the temperature was more comfortable. because of this it was much more difficult for Raimis (and Milda) to catch them. Janis said that there was no other obvious reason, no human intrusion or anything else like that.

Sonchik wrote: September 27th, 2018, 10:20 am I have thought too that we won't see baby birds any more. Parents will begin to banish them now.
that will not stop the eaglets from trying to come back for some time.
i was able to make some recordings in the morning, too.
7:34 Raimis flew to the branch and Milda to the top.
https://youtu.be/EtaDgqpiz-w

7:36 Raimis jumped down to the nest platform and spent some time looking around the branches, tilting his head from side to side. it looked as if he made measurements for branch deliveries.
https://youtu.be/RBelBI2S_ow

7:53 Milda dropped down from the top. then they both made measurements together.

8:04 both were looking up in the sky with interest. they seemed to follow someone who was flying up there... perhaps an eaglet?
https://youtu.be/BsaRmJlVuOY

8:14 Raimis flew out.

8:16 it seemed that Raimis flew by the nest three times at different distances. on the last time he flew by low against the forest and it seemed that at the same time another eagle flew in the sky not very near. that may have been an eaglet.
then Raimis brought the 1st stick.
Raimis put the stick in a rather good place but Milda was not happy with the position. she changed it to a much more insecure place. that was not very convincing... i'll be surprised if this first stick will not fall before too long.

8:36 Milda flew out.

9:04 a sparrow hawk flew to the top branch behind the trunk.
9:11 the hawk flew away.

OK! Logic.
But how about the Sundays ??
The weekends were harder and some times parents were absent for long days :puzzled: It was week after week and there were events at the pond or the racing.
