Re: Black Stork Nests in Europe
Hi Solo and Liz,
what a bad news (again about one of "our" youngsters) about "Mlodszy". If I remember with what a great pleasure we watched them in their nest in 2016 - and now we know that both were shot . But this younger one at least lived a little longer (two seasons).
Sorry, I am now in a sad mood because of my favourite Romeo and Juliet.
.
But at least Lodka - I am happy that Bulgaria perhaps is not a problem .
Liz and Solo, thanks a lot for your sharing info, I am grateful for it (I have very little time again because of my work).

Thank you Solo!
That's very interesting
....
It wasn’t a great surprise to us since back in the mid-1980s our colleagues have described wintering Black storks in the region where rice fields provide good habitat to spend winter.
....e were glad to find out that Lodka is in good company – together with another juvenile bird they are accompanied by 10 adult Black storks.
that's great! Good luck for all of them and and especially to the little Lodka

LODKA these news also on FB Regionalna Dyrekcja Lasów Państwowych w Łodzi (31. Dec. 2018, 11:09)
At the very end of the year, our Bulgarian colleagues from the NGO Zielona Balkans (http://www.greenbalkans.org) gave us a pleasant surprise. They took the trouble to look for Lodka near Plovdiv. The main idea was to check if Lodka was "staring" and left alone, or she has other black storks company. The task seemed simple. Find the stork in the place indicated by its locator. But the search for Lodka took a total of three days. On the first day, text messages with coordinates came with a long delay. On the second day, the first sms with coordinates came only at 19:00. "Fault" was a weak GSM signal level. Lodka could not be found. There was a doubt that she would be not able to find her. But on the third day the GSM signal was twice as good. Lodka was "traced" every 30 minutes. SMSs were coming regularly. The Bulgarians went "like a string". They found a Lodka on a wet meadow in the company of other black storks, mostly adults. So our Lodka did not get lost. She stayed with a group of adult black storks who know from their own experience that even in winter there is food there. How long will he stay there? It is not known - it will depend on current weather conditions. If the water in the canals and rice fields does not freeze, it may be there until spring.
