Thanks a lot for this interesting info, Liz. :2thumbsup:
Could you please mention the source (link) of this article?

EDIT: It's OK, Liz, I found it. :D

Summi, Anne, you're welcome.
I am looking for an answer of backward stretch of the leg. I find a lot, only no answer of that. But I found answer why they standing on one leg..

No answer for the "backward leg stretch" in storks. But swans do it. :faint:
Oh, I have the answer. Summi wrote that Karl II is a black swan

Bird standing on one leg:
mechanisms and meaning

The possible function of standing on one leg

There are many speculations but few experimental studies or quantitative behavioral observations why birds stand on one leg. A couple of possible functions are published in Flamingo file (1991). The suggestion that there might be a dependence of standing on one leg on unihemispheric sleep, which occurs in some birds (Rattenborg 1999), has been disproved recently (Anderson et al. 2018). Two possible functions which have been tested by quantitative observations in recent publications (Anderson & Williams 2009; Bouchard & Anderson 2011; Anderson & Laughlin 2014) will be dealt with in detail: a thermoregulatory function and relaxation of muscle fatigue in the retracted leg.

Thermoregulatory function. Sleeping positions and the occurrence of sleeping on one leg among many orders of birds are described in detail by Stiefel (1979). When sleeping while standing on one leg the head is often hidden in the plumage on the back (Fig. 9). The head is usually positioned on the side of the ground foot or above the center of gravity. This supports a stable balance. The retracted leg is hidden in the breast feathers or under the wing. Hiding non-feathered parts of the body (mainly lower legs and the beak) in the plumage is a useful mechanism to reduce heat loss when sleeping. Reduction of heat loss applies also to e.g. ducks when standing on ice on one foot.

thank you very much, Liz, Anne, visit and everyone, for the lot of interesting pictures, all the nice videos, reports and informations! :2thumbsup:

Thank you, Michi.
This is interesting.
Kati often scratches her chin/cheeks/beak.
Maybe she has little unwanted visitors?
Or is that peeling beak itching?
Anne  , I've also noticed that Kati often scratches her chin. In my opinion it is likely then, that she has parasites. Surely birds have them often.

Regarding of the frequently stretching of Karl II's left leg: Since Balistar :hi: has noticed it I've watched Karl II. His does it so often ... It doesn't seem normal for me at this frequency, and it came to my mind, that he might have an injury at his left leg that hurts.
Outside of the nest many things can happen. Also the incident a few days ago when Kati threw him out of the nest could have caused an injury at his legs. But if I remember correctly, Karl II has been stretching his left leg back so often for quite some time, - even before this incident.

May 7

Good Morning Anne, Michi, Summi, visitor and all :hi:

Kati is still in the nest.
By the way, she is snoring. I heard it in last two nights.

Michi, for me it is also not a normal stretch by Kaupo. I have never seen it before. Neither adult, nor chick or juvenile.
You could be right, with an injury. In the beginning he did not. There are too less females. I think that there were fights outside the nest.
5:57 Kati stands up, is poking in the nest bowl- is doing a ps and settles back on eggs.

Unlike Karl, Kati seems to stretch in the customary way.

Good afternoon to all :hi:

Michi's thought of a possible injury or sprain on Karl II's left leg is also in my opinion very plausible explanation. Hopefully it will heal soon.

Thanks to everyone, for the updates, comments and beautiful pictures.

2 pictures show that our theory is wrong. It has to be something else.
I think I saw it for the first time with her.But I have to admit, I did not pay attention in the past !

If I remember correctly, Anne's theory was that it could be muscle tension. I think that could be true. The cold and the long sitting could trigger it. It is cold there. Hmm... I just do not know

Hm, a probably injury, or sprain, or muscle tension - i think it could be everything and we all don't know for sure. Main thing is, hopefully it isn't serious and does no harm.

14:53:57 when Kati left,
Karl II was tracking her for a few seconds as she disappeared in the forest
Image

14:54:07 then he stepped in the typical "stork step" to the eggs,
first lifted the left leg :D
Image

14:54:08 then the right leg :D and settled down

That's not typical for storks. That's why we discuss.
Where have you watched it so far? I did not see it until now!
Did you see it at White Stork? I do not observe white storks, at least not so intense .. Day after day - hour after hour .. as I do with the black storks.
