Kati leaves

10:55:53 A very good feeding. Karl II brought many small and medium-sized fish.
The small chick is on the left.

10:55:57 All four are in a row and eating.

At last! Urmas has received data about the gender of last year's chicks.
DNA data about last year's young Black Storks.
Päike - ring number 7161 Male
Karula – ring number 7162 Male
Maru – ring number 7163 Female
Thank you, Urmas.
where do you mean, Anne ?I saw on YT that Olga wrote:
Crissy wrote: May 21st, 2019, 1:00 pm This is frightening...i thought parents act this way only when there isnt enough food for some period of time![]()
I hope Kati will not "jump to conclusions" prematurely and based on single events
Thank you for reports![]()
Yes, it may be a bad sign.Anne7 wrote: May 21st, 2019, 12:42 pm Although it was nothing bad, this time, I don't like to see it happen. Kati, PLEASE don't start!
We have seen it happen in previous years.
A combination of begging chicks and an empty crop makes Kati very nervous.
It seems to trigger this behaviour.
You are absolutely right, visit. The problem is that it is impossible for the youngest chick to catch up with the larger chicks within 5-6 days.visit wrote: May 21st, 2019, 1:28 pm ah, thank you Anne :-)
and with translator i can understand russian, too ;)
the problem will not only be the amount of the food (a big factor of course) but e.g. also, whether one chicken will behave in another (e.g. weaker) way than the others. it's a the sum of such factors...
unfortunately the youngster sometimes don't struggle enough to get food or has an unlucky position and therefore the difference in strength to the others will increase. a cycle which should be broken...
*hope and keep my fingers crossed !
Yes, the difference will not disappear but must not increase. They are all in a phase that they grow extremely fast, so the difference will continue to exist, this week.
That's the nature and we should keep it in mind :-)It is difficult for us humans to understand (and unacceptable)
No matter how true it is, we, as humans, will always cheer the weakest.Anne7 wrote: May 21st, 2019, 1:45 pm It is difficult for us humans to understand (and "unacceptable" in our hearts), but often the 4th chick is just a 'spare' chick, in case something should go wrong with one of the 3 older ones.
Thank you, visit!visit wrote: May 21st, 2019, 1:53 pm btw here is a video of the last feeding and the youngster was this time really active moving from the back to the front for getting some food :-))

OK, I will take a look at that and post some pics.
