Paltamo: Penna delivered big fish 16:10:53 -

Incredible 1 hour feed including a long, long wait for BoB3 (Tiny Tom) challenging the blocking of his strong sibblings. Osplet 1 is filled up & takes a rest. Osplet 2 takes its share, pressing down little opponent Tiny Tom, but he withstands and still doesn't give up to hold his position. Two osplets are fed - Tiny Tom gets a step foreward and gets his share at least. Tiny Tom nears food coma...

1. Satakunnan sääkset Alma ja Ossi (Osprey Cam in Finland).

So beautiful morning feeding and suddenly it's over.
Ossi was gone and Alma wasn't strong like a hawk.
Parents kept calling over the forest.

5:18 it could turn and crawl to the nest edge.
Image

the fist ospret is still alive. The goshawk is eating it . That's almost too much

for me this is not fast.. that's a cruel long time

5:22 The goshawk does not eat, he watches the chick at the nest edge. the little one under his belly breathes very hard.

meanwhile it takes 22 minutes. I stop watching. It's too much. All three are still alive and with the goshawk
The little one under the hawk tries to escape. I am glad that I do not see what it looks like. It has to be awful

5:27 he continues plucking the little one
I think the chick on the nest edge is injured

5:28 he went to the chick on the nest edge and is plucking it. It also is still alive
the other chick did not move anymore

the chick in the foreground it seem to me is already dead
The goshawk went to the chick on the nest edge and is eating it. The other chicks are dead  I don't know
Image

The nest is a battlefield and dead chicks remained back in the nest

I did not think they would eat their prey without killing
Nothing to hear or to see of an parent in all the time

5:46 he is still eating
5:48 Parent comes home .. much too late
He attacked the goshawk
5:49 the goshawk grabbed the little one and flew away with it

So the whole thing lasted nearly 50 minutes, before the goshawk finally flew away with one of the dead osprets. (The other two were left behind in the nest - maybe for pick-up later?) But I couldn't bear to watch most of it, either; particularly because I'd been following these three osprets since the day they were born.

People like to repeat the "law of nature" mantra in cases like this. But I still find it difficult to understand why this happened the way it did (i.e. all three osprets killed at once, only one partly eaten). Anyhow, I'm certainly going to remember this season as the one where "goshawk anxiety" became the rule of nestcam-watching, rather than the exception.
