ame wrote: July 14th, 2019, 2:21 pm yes, i suppose it must be something like that. the eaglets try to get straight up and that will not work. it is probably like Ajeta wrote: they have not understood yet that they have to first fly away from the thing they want to get.
Yes, and if food is afoot, they stop thinking straight and obsess about reaching the nest directly = failure (more often than not). Have any of the landings failed when they just are coming to the nest (no fresh food present)?

Ajeta, our precious Durberta failed just like that and became world famous.
viewtopic.php?p=407456#p407456

13:36 Rika started to look to the right and she called.
she had called already before this every now and then but now she had a special reason: a parent flew by.

14:42 Rika made a round trip to the outer left branch and back.
then she felt the wind in her wings...

... and she flew out.

Crissy :hi: You thought you can go on vacation  You see, we still have work with those two
Hey Abigyl :hi: Well, this is even worse than pre-fledging period, keeping an eye on a teenager eagle is like 24/7 surveillance mode Image

from a branch it is impossible to make a high jump. when one leaps up the legs push down the branch and it will yield and the bird will not gain much height relative to the tree.
What a beastly contradiction, pushing upwards to sink downwards. Life is really hard - your own legs working against you, so to speak.

Thanks for the link, Ame! Durbert = Durberta, right? That was quite a landing indeed - my heart would have stopped had I seen it live for fear of him/her beaking his wings or legs or both. But she solved her problem very spiritedly! Incidentally, was it not that branch that also somehow got meddled in her first flight? What an untrustworthy piece of wood

yes Ajeta: Durbert = Durberts= Durberta. the assumption was that Durbert = Durberts was a male. almost all male names in Latvian end with the letter s. this assumption proved later to be wrong (as usual). in the gene test Durberts was found to be a girl and thus the name was transformed to a female form Durberta.

the nest has remained intact. i haven't been listening though.

the woodpecker flew away and the eaglet (Miks probably) went on crying for a while. it also probably flew by but i could not see it.

21:05 quiet. then 'normal' crying.

 Hello Sonchik, that's precisely what I thought, too, Rika's crying sounded like coming from directly between camera and viewer, going left to right. Afterwards she came from the right and tried to get to the nest. From the sound of it she must have been doing quite some flying, before her first landing ("downstairs") as well as afterwards, before she finally returned. Very brave, especially because it seemed rather warm (Raimis and Mika were panting on the nest).

When many times flew by a nest and could not get to it. At us speak "as a blind kitten".
