Awful! Miina and Marko did so very well protecting them, but it only took 1 second, literally.Birdfriend wrote: July 18th, 2019, 4:10 pm Oh no, no, no I've so hoped too...![]()

I know meanwhile, that chicks are never to big for the goshawk. In a polish nest two chicks are killed and mostlikely the father too. They were in the same stage as Miinas and Markos chicks.
The third chick there was already fledged, but the goshawk killed him also nearby from his nest. The female is missed...it's so terrible for our beloved ospreys in this season.
I fear, that he/she come back again, he/she know one chick is still there.![]()
Yes, she did, and both were as flat on the floor as can be and it did not make any difference
Yes, Summi it's horrible for sure, it's my favourite nest this season and now that...I loved this nice family from the beginning...Summi wrote: July 18th, 2019, 4:17 pm When you watch them for such a long time and begin to love them and then ......![]()

I'll never forgive myself, my joke
Most likely a hawk killed him already in the nest or immediately on the ground..sova wrote: July 18th, 2019, 4:33 pm Is it possible that someone who lives near, go look.
Maybe the UH is not dead. Maybe he could hide somewhere ...
Yeah, we're more paranoid...relaxed, unlike mother Miina!
Oh Gavril .... I do not know what to hope for.Gavril wrote: July 18th, 2019, 4:39 pm Most likely a hawk killed him already in the nest or immediately on the ground..
Hawks are very fast and strong birds. No wonder they are used as hunters.
Don't be sad about it, Sova. You could not have known, no one could know.
I don't think UH could have been killed in the nest -- there wasn't time for that. Anyone who saw what happened in the Finnish nest will know (unfortunately) that it takes some time to kill an ospret of this size. Here the goshawk just grabbed UH by the head and dragged it over the side of the nest. So everything really depends (or: depended) on whether the goshawk was able to carry the ospret or not.Gavril wrote: July 18th, 2019, 4:39 pm Most likely a hawk killed him already in the nest or immediately on the ground..
Interesting.yitmoth wrote: July 18th, 2019, 4:54 pm It's worth mentioning a very similar attack that was seen about 10 days ago on the Booted Eagle nestcam from Catalonia. There, too, an unfledged eaglet was dragged over the back rail of the nest by a goshawk. The next day some national park workers found the eaglet on the ground below, injured but still alive. The eaglet is now in rehabilitation.
