Osprey Nests in North America

The same tragedy every year.
Chimega, I haven't observe that nest this season, has Rachel her bad leg from an fight with GHO? I don't like to read their chat.

Hi Birdfriend,

It is thought Rachel injured her leg and her foot due to a Bald Eagle attack. Every morning they seem to be fighting the Bald Eagles and on and off all day, too.

This whole thing has been really rough. We were all on Owl watch overnight, again, last night. I was so close to a panic attack all night. At around 3:30am, I believe, Rachel started alerting. Scared me to bits. I was terrified to look, at all. But it was just an alert. I also have a feeling there was really something there.

Last night, just at dark, someone set off a whole lot of fireworks which may scare the Owl away. And now they are playing a recording of Dr Bierregaard giving a talk which is a very interesting one and I will post that talk too.

Dr Bierregaard giving a talk about Ospreys and about Hog Island and Rachel, too. I suggest anyone interested in this nest, listen to him. He's very dedicated.

I browsed twice Dr. B.'s elaborations, could not spot anything about Rachel though. Are they going to help her now?

Guess Rachel will not survive - even if she is able to catch a fish she would need her two legs and feet to eat it safely. Oh my.

Both chicks are fledged meanwhile, for luck. Sera was on the nest with one of the chicks last night. She is a very dedicated female osprey. Last year she raised with Luther two chicks, this season too. I'm very happy about after the tragedy from 2017.

From today morning:
Luther brings a huge fish to Sera and the chick, which overnighted with her on the nest.


Now the chick is better to see...


One hour later Sera is also sated and left with the half eaten fish. She came back again with it and immediately the second chick arrived and took the fish from Mom.

No, sadly they are saying Rachel is getting better every day. They will not help her. The only way I know for sure that they would if she fell into the water or onto land and couldn't fly. ThenI think they would.

All I can do is pray that she manages to be able to make migration and back, again, next spring. And I have some doubts unless she improves a lot more before she leaves.

Around 8pm, a large Bald Eagle passed over the nest at Hog Island. Halley was laying in the nest and Rachel was on the perch.

Dear Chimega, the certain mod at Audubon states the following in reply to the question (quoted from pennalope, IL, with copy and paste by me): 'Yesterday evening there was a flyover by a large bird that Poppy posted a video of speculating weather it was a Bald Eagle or not.' Moderator: 'It was an osprey, most probably Steve.'

This is staggering.

That's an out and out lie, Rita! 1000s of us saw it, Poppy recorded it, too, and her video said Bald Eagle or Eagle as well. Now they are trying to downplay it. Today, Rachel went after an Eagle, again! I am posting the video, now. You can clearly hear the Eagle's voice on it.
