11.September

KA O was on the perch in the later morning, I guess it was a farewell for us watchers. I scrolled through the day...no Aran to see and no more visits from the youngster. Most likely they begun their long migration now. Since 9.September I have not more seen Mrs.G.

There are still two ospreys in the Glaslyn. KA0, who was absent for a large part of the day came screeching back to the nest at teatime as Aran brought her a flounder.

Mrs G, however, has not been seen since Monday evening. It is safe to say she is on her way south.

Safe journey, Mrs G. We hope you make it back to us next year.

KA0 reached yet another milestone today, joining the 111 club. She is now one of five Glaslyn osprey chicks to have migrated at 111 days old or above, the record being held by KS3 who migrated at 119 days old in 2018.

We will have a more detailed blog to share with you soon which includes more interesting facts and figures about our birds, but we can't yet finish our graphs! The weather is looking fine for the next couple of days, which means we could be saying goodbye to our two remaining ospreys very soon.

Although KA0 had been seen a few times, we had not spotted Aran at all today and we were starting to wonder whether he had gone. Just before 5.30pm KA0 came screeching back to the nest, closely followed by Aran carrying a headless flounder. KA0 quickly snatched it from him and Aran flew to the rear of the nest trees while KA0 mantled over the fish. KA0 then took her supper down to the oak perches to eat.

Looks as though we will be opening the Visitor Centre tomorrow after all!

Look who's still here! KA0 returned to the perch this afternoon after being absent all morning and is currently busy chasing crows. We have not seen Aran as yet.

Thank you seira!

update from today noon:
Bywyd Gwyllt Glaslyn Wildlife - Glaslyn Ospreys.
KA0 was seen briefly on the perch at 7:15 this morning. We have had no further sightings as yet. She is now 115 days old, which equals the record of KS2 last year for being the second longest Glaslyn chick to migrate. We will keep you updated throughout the day if we have any other sightings.

There were no further sightings of KA0 today. Could it be that she finally felt confident enough to begin her journey south? We have certainly noted a gradual change in her behaviour during the past few days, she has spent long periods away from the nest site and it was noted yesterday that she was silent for once when she sat on the perch. The only time she called was when Aran delivered supper.

There were no confirmed sightings of Aran either, but just as the Visitor Centre doors were closed a possible osprey was spotted through the telescope, heading towards the nest site. It circled over the nest area before heading back in the direction of trees to the side of the valley, where Aran has regularly been known to perch. Was it Aran checking out whether his daughter was around and in need of supper?

Conditions are currently perfect for migration. Bon voyage KA0.

An empty valley?

There have been no sightings of ospreys in the valley today. It looks as though the last of the Glaslyn family have finally started their migration.
After reviewing the footage of an osprey flying over the nest area yesterday evening, we are fairly certain it was Aran taking one last look to see if his chick needed him for more food.

Needless to say, the Glaslyn is a much quieter place without KA0 around.

New blog!
As the sun sets on yet another osprey season, we take a look back on the highs and lows of the season and look forward to our upcoming Wild Autumn events.

Mrs G has always been a long-staying bird, regularly arriving back to Wales from migration earlier than many other ospreys, and leaving later too. She was last sighted this season on 9th September and has only ever been recorded as leaving the valley in August on three occasions; namely 2007, 2010 and 2013. The protection site was not closely monitored in August during the years it was not managed by BGGW, there were fewer camera views available and no sound, so it is possible that the ospreys remained longer than our records show. Since BGGW took over the running of the project in 2014, Mrs G has never migrated earlier than September 2nd.

Could this be an indication of her wintering destination? Some people have theorised that Mrs G may only winter as far as southern Europe, which would mean she had a shorter distance to travel, and could, therefore, afford to start her migration later in the season and return earlier when the breeding season starts. We may never know the real reason she likes to be in the valley for such a long period, but we count ourselves lucky we get to enjoy her and her family’s company for as long as we do!

Happy St David’s Day to all Glaslyn Osprey followers!

Despite the wind and rain, there are signs that spring is on its way. The snowdrops and daffodils are in flower, the frogs are spawning and already the birds are singing and finding mates before they start building their nests. Of course, spring in the Glaslyn Valley means only one thing! It heralds the return of our magnificent Ospreys.

Image

To celebrate St David’s Day, we are launching our Annual Live Streaming Appeal. We had planned to switch the nest camera on early this year to coincide with the launch, but while we were testing the system we discovered a fault. At the moment we do not know whether the fault is related to the terrible weather and flooding we are currently experiencing or whether a piece of essential equipment has failed. We will keep you informed of the situation. You can rest assured that we will be working hard over the next few days to ensure that the fault is fixed and we will switch on the nest camera as soon as possible to make sure we don’t miss any unexpected visitors to the nest – be it a raucous raven or cheeky squirrel or an early osprey! We will be prepared for that special moment when our iconic Mrs G lands on the nest for her 17th breeding season, with Aran not far behind her!

Here is the moment Mrs G landed at 10:36 this morning. She had to chase the crows away before going fishing and returning later in the afternoon with a large trout. Returning for her 17th season, she is the longest breeding osprey in Wales. An incredible bird!

Here it is - the moment Aran rejoined Mrs G on the nest.

The magical moment was disturbed somewhat by an intruding osprey overhead and Mrs G later put Aran to shame with her enormous catch.
But rest assured, it is business as usual on the Glaslyn nest today.
Now the season has well and truly begun!
