Black Stork Nest in Karula 2020

Post by Jo UK »

The Karula National Park in the south of Estonia is a perfect place for black storks to nest and breed.
The two adult birds we watched last year were named Karl II and Kati. They had four chicks, initially, but only two went on to fledge. Sadly, neither of them survived.

Here, one can read about Karula National Park

Many articles about What We Know About Black Storks.

Some of the posts are lengthy - be prepared for a good read!

Urmas and colleague have completed the camera work for Black Stork and osprey in the woods but we have to wait for server works, yet.
The nests have not yet been visited by the nest owners.

To help us identify Kati and Karl II, here are some pictures showing the different markings around the eyes and upper beaks.

Please keep watching the Looduskalender Youtube channel and tell us when the Karula camera is online. Our members are often first to know when a camera is live!

Thank you very much for opening this new topic, Jo! :2thumbsup:

Hopefully the camera will be online soon.
Possibly Karl II and/or Kati are already on the nest.

I cross my fingers for a prosperous breeding season.

The Black Stork cam will be visible probably on the Kotkaklubi YT channel (not on Looduskalender YT channel)

Both are unringed but I think everybody here knows how to distiguish the arrival of males and females.

Asteria, not everyone here will know how to identify a male and a female. We have new members and we want to accomodate all members.

Black Stork cam is installed in 30th, but we still have to solve some network issues outside forest. No any sign of presence of storks was seen during the installation on nest. Also no remarkable storm damages near the nest site, but further. Some big trees on the path, so we needed to carry longer way the batteries.

FlutteringBy, welcome.

Pleased to see you are in Northern Canada. There are fewer members from your side of the pond.
(get off my duff was a clue!)

There are no promises but tomorrow, no today, there will be a meeting about getting a server for the black stork camera.
Send good vibes, thoughts, prayers that it is successful.
