Yes, Karl II came in at 18:45, pooped and left at once to the left. Did he come on the nest or to the loo?

Biker, that would be sweet. With Kati it has undoubtedly worked. :D

Michi, that's the reason why he tried it this way also with his new lady.

19:07:51 Karl II arrived at nest.

19:10:00 He left again. Karl II is obviously a fighter. He's not giving up on conquering the female.

At 16:29:35 the lady stepped on Karl's beak......( the moment with Karl II, lying on the side) . With her left leg, short, only on his beak tip and it was not intended, because his beak stuck in the hay. :slap:
(may be that's why he lay there a bit longer in that position than - actually - intended by him)

a short clip, to watch that moment in full screen

Hello everybody

Thank you biker for the little video.
In my opinion it would be important and good to have the minutes before and after this behaviour in the videoclip, too.
e.g. that before he had sung very much, was very "excited" and than suddenly layed down.

(At first i thought *uff, is he so exhausted that he has to lay down ? :D
But perhaps laying down is in context to his extremely singing before just a part of the mating ritual and like imitating a young stork to activate the maternal instinct *don't know)

have a good night !

May 4th.

Good Morning :hi:

thank you very much for reporting the nest events :2thumbsup:

6:02 Karl is poking in the nest bowl.

6:03 He looks calm and a bit happy :D

BTW: I am amazed that the lady still has brown feathers. Maybe she can't find a water where she can clean her plumage? It is unusual for me. Black storks love to take a bathe. Usually you can see it, in breeding birds if they are sitting in a wet nest. Kati was also sometimes muddy on the plumage.

Yes, Karl always looks like an oil drill on his beak. :rotf:

Liz01
I find that just as unusual, otherwise Karl would also have to be dirty on the chest.

I have a few guesswork in store:

She is already on a nest and has been addressed by Karl's calls, has fallen in love and visits him in her short free time.
Maybe she tried out dear Karl and flies away when he wants to mate because it can't be done now because there are already eggs in another nest.
Or as an animal she instinctively knows that it might be too late for a current breed and that everyone, including the young stork, cannot fly south in time. Or, or, or .......

I find it very strange that she is only with Karl for so short.

I checked my watch, it only took Karl 2.5 minutes to get new nesting material.

Ahhh the lady came at 8.53 a.m.
Flew away briefly after attempting to mate, but now there again.

Karl has lay down and she takes care of him and the nest a little.
She covers Karl.

If I see Karl climbing on the lady, it could show where her frayed feather comes from.

So not from Karl now, maybe from other attempts by other people.

But she doesn't quite escape after the attempts, maybe a good sign.

Good morning :hi:

Liz and visit, thank you for your pics and videos.

On front page of Looduskalender it is said that the lean and dirty female is too young for nesting.

Maybe Karl will have to understand that and just enjoy their company with little tete a tete

Today, long-term cleaning with temporary synchronized maintenance and subtle mating attempts seems to be the order of the day.

The brown lady must already be snow white by constant cleaning.

She pooped into the nest and flew away. I wonder how long she stays away

After all, she stayed 1.5 hours
